Google assistant still references old device names

This is an issue I've had for a while now. I have two smart outlets around the house - I once used one of them to control my Christmas tree lights, but have since reconfigured the outlet to be a kettle. However, the outlet STILL is toggled when I ask the Assistant to "turn off all the lights." This is a little frustrating and I haven't been able to figure out how to get around it.

It also seems to be affecting my Vizio TV and my newly-set up Chromecast w/Google TV. I renamed my Vizio to "Vizio" and set the Chromecast to "TV" - the Assistant gets confused when I ask to turn the TV on and I'm told to specify the device I want to control (which I did!)

Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Thanks!

Hi codename88,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community.

I know how it feels when something isn’t working as it should, so let’s get this resolved. What you can do with your smart outlet concern is to unlink and relink it then name it back to “Kettle” then observe if this will fix it. For the TV name make sure to change the device name uniquely. Your Google assistant might get confused if you will name your Chromecast as “TV” only since Vizio is categorized as the same type of device. Check the steps below on how to unlink and relink your smart outlet and rename your TV.

Unlink:

  1. Make sure your mobile device is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as the speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app .
  3. Tap account (your initial or your profile picture).
  4. Verify the Google Account on screen is the one linked to the speaker or display. To switch accounts, tap the down arrow icon and then choose another account or Add another account .
  5. Select Assistant Settings and then Home Control.
  6. Under Linked services, tap the home automation partner and then Unlink account and then Unlink.

Relink:

  6. Tap the Search box, type the name of the Home Automation partner then link the account.
Note: If the home automation account is listed under Linked Services, tap “Reconnect account” then follow the on-screen instructions.

Change the device name:

  1.  Make sure your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app .
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. At the top right corner, tap Settings and then Device information and then Device name.
  5. Enter a new name and then tap Save.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Juni

Hi Juni,

Thanks for the help. I resolved the issue by removing the smart plug from the Kasa app and setting it up again. This resolved the issue.

Thanks!
