Google home cannot turn on or off nest thermostats already added to the account

I have reported an issue where Google Home devices suddenly cannot find or control Nest devices, such as thermostats, despite both being linked to the same Google account and appearing in the Google Home app under the same home. Previously, the integration worked seamlessly, with no changes made to the Google Home or Nest devices, network settings, or account configurations. When users attempt to issue voice commands (e.g., to turn on or off a Nest thermostat), Google Assistant responds that it cannot find the device, even though the devices are visible and appear connected in the app.

Ignore the ios selection above. I did not have choice to skip the platform. Problem is google home does not detect the nest thermostats in its account and cannot reply to voice commands. Example: hey google turn on nest or turn on living room nest. It cannot find the nest devices to operate on. However they are successful added and visible in the google home app under same home.

Hi @sushantk,

Thanks for reaching out here in the community! I understand that Google Home devices are suddenly unable to control Nest devices, particularly Nest thermostats. Even though these devices are on the same account and visible in the Home app, Google Assistant says it can't find them when you try to trigger the command to turn on the thermostat. I'd be happy to help with this!

I appreciate you taking the time to report this situation. To better investigate and provide you with accurate steps, I’d like to ask for the following information:

  • What is the specific model of the Nest thermostat? Here’s a helpful article about how to identify your thermostat model.
  • Which app did you use for the initial setup of the thermostat?
  • Is your Google Home device able to recognize any other commands to control the thermostat or other devices?
  • Is the Google Home device powered on?
  • Have you ever been able to control the Nest thermostat using your Google Home device?
  • Have you tried any troubleshooting steps so far?
In the meantime, I'd suggest double-checking the following:
  • The Nest thermostat and your mobile device are successfully set up on the same Wi-Fi network as the speaker.
  • The Google account on your mobile device is the same account linked to your Google Home device and the primary account within the Google Home app. To see which account is linked to your speaker, you can refer to this article: Check which Google account is linked to a speaker or display.
  • The Nest thermostat device is listed within your Google Assistant's connected devices. You can check this by going to the Google Home app > Settings > Assistant > Devices.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

Thanks for your reply.

For troubleshooting I have reset the nest devices (2 of them) and added them back to the account. Tried changing the names of the nest devices but it did not work.

Answer in line:

  • What is the specific model of the Nest thermostat? Here’s a helpful article about how to identify your thermostat model.  - ANS: Nest Learning Thermostat Display (3rd Generation)
  • Which app did you use for the initial setup of the thermostat? ANS: Nest App
  • Is your Google Home device able to recognize any other commands to control the thermostat or other devices? - ANS: Yes, I have 6 google home devices and all the devices can control other smart devices like smart bulbs, cameras, smart tvs etc except the nest devices
  • Is the Google Home device powered on? - ANS: Yes
  • Have you ever been able to control the Nest thermostat using your Google Home device? - ANS: Yes, I was able to control the nest devices always until one day it suddenly stopped recognizing the nest devices when I use voice commands "Hey Google, turn on nest or turn off nest or turn on living room nest or turn on bedroom nest, etc"
  • Have you tried any troubleshooting steps so far? - ANS: Yes I have reset the nest devices, tried re adding the device to google home but it is not working.

Hi @sushantk,

Thanks for following up!

I appreciate all the information provided and the workarounds already implemented. I understand that you performed a factory reset on both of your Nest thermostats. Could you please confirm if this is correct?

To further isolate this behavior, I'd suggest following extra steps:

  • First, ensure you can control the Nest thermostat through the Nest app. Then, turn off the thermostat using the app.
  • Try syncing your Google Nest devices by using the voice command 'Sync my devices,' or if you want to be more specific, use the voice command 'Sync my thermostat.' For reference, see this article: Control smart home devices added to the Google Home app.
  • Try turning on the thermostat by following this voice command word-for-word: 'Turn on cooling or heating' or 'Set the thermostat to heating or cooling.' For more information, please refer to this article: Use Google Assistant with Nest products.

Please keep me updated.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

  • First, ensure you can control the Nest thermostat through the Nest app. Then, turn off the thermostat using the app.
    ANS: Done
  • Try syncing your Google Nest devices by using the voice command 'Sync my devices,' or if you want to be more specific, use the voice command 'Sync my thermostat.' For reference, see this article: Control smart home devices added to the Google Home app.
ANS: Synced my thermostats and can see on the screen my two nest thermostats Living Room Nest & Bedroom Nest
  • Try turning on the thermostat by following this voice command word-for-word: 'Turn on cooling or heating' or 'Set the thermostat to heating or cooling.' For more information, please refer to this article: Use Google Assistant with Nest products.

ANS: So thermostats voice commands worked by adding the words cooling or heat to the voice command. "Turn on cooling" or "Turn on Living Room Nest Cooling" worked. Earlier the words cooling and heat wasn't required.
Now that if I want to start both thermostats at the same time is not possible. Because the nest thermostats and google home associated to specific bedroom always turns on bedroom cooling when said "Turn on cooling" and it does not start living room nest. If I say "Turn on all cooling" or "Turn on living room and bedroom cooling" than it also tries to start my smart fans in the home and later fails stating that other devices does not have this functionality. In short, it use to be very smooth earlier. Just say the word "Turn on Nest" "Turn off nest" use to work perfectly for turning on both thermostats. And to turn on specific one we use to say "Turn on living room nest" or "Turn on bedroom nest". It was way simpler. Not sure why it does not recognize the nest names now. Now when I try the same commands it either says thermostat is not present or tries to play some random music on  youtube.
