How do I Allow Limited Thermostat Access

JvD
Community Member

Hi. I have a Nest thermostat in each of 2 properties and I can access & control them both on my Nest App. I want to give my Daughter access to just one of the thermostats in one property, but not both.

I can ask her to download the Nest App. Also she does have a Google Account so she could access the Google Home system etc.

Problem: I don't know how to set her up on the Nest App or th Google App to give her access as Ive described above. Can someone help please?

The only way you can accomplish this is to create two separate "homes", one for each property, and give the other user access to only one home.  There is no finer grained user control than this.

If you have Nest Aware, this will also mean you'll need two subscriptions as subscriptions are at the home level.

You can see and control all of the Homes you're a member of, so if you're a member of the home your daughter is a member of you'll have full access to all the devices in that home as well.

Many thanks.

So if I set my Daughter up on the Google Home or Nest App for one thermostat in one property, will I still be able to see both on my Nest app as I can now? If so can I also have some control or not?

Cheers, J

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for your email.

Yes I do still have a. Issue.
My daughter has downloaded the Nest App and the Google Home App and signed in to that. However I have tried to invite her to join the household to access the thermostat but it won’t work.
I’ve had to erase the property thermostat from my Nest App and sign her into it on her Neat App as a single user. But now I have no access which is what I needed.
Is it possible for me to sign back into the second property/thermostat on my Nest App now my daughter is the main user?

Thanks
John van Dijk

Hey folks!

Thanks for keeping us posted. It looks like you aren’t yet added to her family account as she becomes the account owner when you added the thermostat to her account. You need to add yourself as a family member in order to access the thermostat.

Here’s how:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home.
  2. Switch to the home you want to share.
  3. At the top, tap Add Add > Invite home member > Invite a person.
    • If you don't find "Invite home member," tap Add person to home.
  4. Enter the name or email address of the person you want to invite to your home > tap Next.
  5. Review what’s shared when you add someone to your home > tap Next.
  6. Review the person’s access to your home > tap Send.
  7. If your Google Family Group isn’t full and the person you’re inviting isn’t already in one, you should get the option to invite them to your Google Family Group.
    • To invite them, tap Add to Family.
    • To skip this step, tap No Thanks.

The person you invite should receive an email with instructions.

Note: You can have up to 6 members in a Google Family Group. If the person you want to invite has already requested to join your home, you need to accept that request instead of sending a new invitation.

Let us know how it goes.

I appreciate the help here, BinaryJay and Jennifer.

Best,

JT
