Nest Doorbell and Smart Home Integrations

It is my understanding that this feature used to be available with 3rd party app integrations but has since been removed by Google. I would like to have the ability for the Nest Doorbell to trigger a smart home automation when a person is detected on the doorbell.

If someone approaches my door at night, I would like to turn on a smart switch that controls my front porch light. So someone coming to the door makes the light go on for several reasons: First and foremost, safety. If someone is approaching and has bad intentions, a light turning on might deter them. Also, the light helps illuminate the person to know who it was. Finally for safety, walking up to a dark entry door is not as safe as walking up to a lit porch to help with watching where you step and any potential criters in your path.

I hope this is a feature that can be activated soon to allow my Google Home smart automations to work.

Agreed, I just set up several NEST cameras and thermostats, thinking I could do this. After installing all the NEST devices, I started with Hue bulbs and Lutron switches. I contacted Lutron about turning on lights when a NEST camera triggers an event, and I was told you can only do that with Ring Cameras now! I just spent thousands on NEST products believing I could do this, and currently, my return window has closed, not to mention all the time I spent installing everything, and I cannot do what I intended from the beginning. Is NEST going to add this back in? The ability to turn on a light when a NEST camera alert occurs is a no-brainer for any security system. I love the design of the NEST cameras and thermostats, but I am willing to remove them all without this feature.

Hi folks,

Thanks for reaching out. It sounds like a very good feature to integrate in the whole Nest and Google Home system — we hear you. We appreciate users who are keen on sharing their thoughts with us — we'll take this as feedback. Keep an eye on the Google Nest Community page https://goo.gle/2JvnMRy for any updates. Please let me know if you have other questions or concerns as I will be locking this in 24 hours if I won't hear back from you again. Feel free to start a new thread and we'll be happy to help.

Check out this link on how to file feedback.

Thanks,

JT

This can't be the first time that someone at Google has come across this idea/request.. If it's going to take too much time for someone to develop that code, can you at least give us access to the old "Works With Google API", so we can go find a solution that works outside of the Google ecosystem?

I used to be able to turn on my Hue lights from 10PM to 6AM when my nest cam saw a person. That was with Stringify home automation software 3-4 years ago. Stringify was bought and killed for some unknown reason. Got Google Home app and it refuses to do anything like this. You would think since the app and the cam are from the same company there would be strong integration to support home security.

Google used to have a "Works with Google" API that allowed 3rd party apps like IFTTT to trigger an event when motion was detected by the doorbell camera. But Google was so kind to remove that feature and leave us all high and dry with nothing to do. This is really a simple automation that would take a programmer like 3 minutes to write the code for.
