Unable to connect to wifi for my Lenovo smart clock essential

Iam using the google home app to setup my Lenovo smart clock essential however, when I try to connect to the wifi it just says "Connection problem during setup" and to "Please check your Wi-Fi network settings". Iam using University internet so there is a username and password for it, which doesn't pop up so Im thinking that is the issue but I am logged in on my phone. Any help with this would be great!

Most smart home devices don't support these kind of Wifi systems, known as captive portals, that require you to login first to be able to access the internet.

There are a couple of possible solutions for this:

  1. Check with whoever manages your Wifi if they have a process to whitelist your device. They do this by allowing the unique MAC address of the device. Not all providers will be setup do this however. In addition, even this may not work on some Wifi networks, as the administrator may have enabled a security feature called client isolation, which prevents different devices from communicating with each other (i.e. your phone communicating with your clock).

  2. Although unsupported by Google or Lenovo I'd suspect, you can try to use a phone or tablet as a Wifi hotspot. However, this will then use your mobile data plan, which could be expensive for you depending on the data plan you have with your carrier. Note you will need 2 devices to set this up.
    1. Turn on the Wifi hotspot feature on a phone or tablet. If you're not sure how to do this, refer to the manufacturer's support website.
    2. Connect a second phone or tablet to that Wifi hotspot.
    3. You can then use that second phone or tablet to setup your clock and connect it to the Wifi hotspot on the first phone or tablet.

  3. If you're able to use  a wired network connection instead, you could invest in your own cheap router and connect your devices to that router instead.

Hey there,

davidking, thanks for those troubleshooting steps — it's a big help.

Ccapee, checking back in if setting up your Lenovo device using mobile hotspot as an alternative works for you. If the issue persists, you can contact Lenovo support for additional assistance.

Best,

Alex

Thanks for the advice! I was told to use the second option to use a mobile hotspot to set it up so that I can get the MAC address, so I was going to do that. However, the new google home app now has a small selection of options on which type of device you are trying to setup and there isn't an option for any sort of smart clock so it looks like I keep running into issues 😅

Hello Ccapee,

We understand that your concern is isolated with your Lenovo Smart clock having problems connecting to your network. Please note that we have very limited support on third party speakers with built-in Google Assistant like Lenovo. It is best to report this with Lenovo support for better assistance.

If you need help with your Google Home/Nest devices, please do not hesitate to reply on this thread as I'll be locking this thread after 24 hours.

Kind regards,

Alex
