How do I connect the Galaxy Watch 4 to Google Home?

It opens the Google Home app for me, but doesn't take me anywhere where I can connect the watch

Galaxy Watch 4 isn't a device you can add/setup with the Google Home app. You don't need to as there's no features of your watch that the Google Home app can control.

The screen/feature you're looking at is for those who have Google Home compatible devices (such as speakers, displays, thermostats) already setup in the Home app on their phone. It allows them to do quick controls for those types of devices using their watch. It isn't for management of the watch itself.

I have devices at home that are controlled via Google Home, I just want to be able to control these devices using the app that is installed on my watch,

That's what's strange, I did exactly what appears in the link you sent, but as soon as I open Google Home on the watch, the message shown in the picture above appears
