Facial Recognition

Stuart_of_Skelf

This has been raised and noted several time (I can't reply to any of the closed instances) so raising it again.

Our doorbell has our eldest daughter registered as a familiar face.  Her sister is 4 years younger and it is impossible to get it to register her as a new person as it consistently "recognises" her as her older sister.  All I can do is delete her from the library against her sister's name.  I am utterly unable to add her in any way as a new person.  No factory reset or deleting her sister from the library will allow me to fix this, it is not learning in any way as it will not allow me to verify a library of images for each sister. I NEED TO BE ABLE TO HIGHLIGHT THE INCORRECTLY IDENTIFIED PICTURES AND ASSIGN THEM TO A NEW NAME.  This "move" pictures feature has been asked for several times and yet a year plus later from the first one I can find it's still not there.  Please act on these requests and get this feature working so the facial recognition can actually get better.  If it can't recognise the difference between two not very similar sisters and won't allow the user to do anything to fix that it isn't fit for purpose!

That is very interesting to hear that you played a part with that process! Thank you for your insight and feedback. An update has gone out to facial recognition and the Familiar Faces feature as of today. Nest Aware customers now have the ability to merge and move Familiar faces in the library. These features enhance user control on managing their Familiar face library. Further updates soon.

Brad

Same issue here with my battery powered doorbell. My daughter and her niece who’s 3 years younger and doesn’t really look like my daughter are identified as 1 and the same person.
it is absolutely unacceptable from a company like Google that nothing is being done about this. Users simply have no option to help the AI / algorithm to learn. The responses from Google in the aforementioned threads are appalling too. Acknowledging a problem doesn’t fix it.

Completely agree, the only way it can learn is if it is repeatedly told that they are not the same person, specifically excluding this as a function is self defeating. My last issue was never fixed and with no notice days later a mod would close it due to inactivity. That inactivity being no actual solutions to my problem.  Even if there isn't a move function there should be a button when the person is there to make the system store it as a new person so you can at least create a new person entity; if the processing can't differentiate between the two after that it should store it in both names in the library so you can delete which ones are correct or not. I can tell from the little thumbprint sized image.

Google recognizes me and my friend and we don’t even look alike. We’re not even in the same family. Every time she comes to the door it says that I am at the door. One time it actually confused my husband who is 6‘5“ tall and me who is 5‘3“ tall. Really quite frustrating for a company as good as Google.

But it's nest aware, not integrated fully with Google services. Seems to be in process. Why doesn't this Google service integrate with my people labeled in Google photos? It better soon or I am going back to ring, I miss it..

None of these ideas are remotely close to the edge of the envelope whoever is monitoring this, they are just common sense usability!

Do I need to keep responding in this to stop someone closing it thinking it's been answered?

Just had an email from Google asking if I got an answer to my problem. No, so far there's been people who have the same problem in this and other threads. At no point has there been an actual solution. There's been suggestions of things that will definitely not cure the problem. No more.

Guess what Brad… there’s still no fix nor option to tie wrongfully “recognised” people to other nor new known faces.

@Booreiland

That is correct. This request is not a current feature. I can only ask you to provide your feedback in the app. I do not have any further updates on this inquiry. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Brad

How can my "request" not be a current feature? When I tab an incorrect picture, the Google Home app asks me if I want to move or delete it, but there's no way to move it to an existing known face nor to add it to a new known face...

Have you made sure that your Google Home App has recently been updated?

Yes. I'm on 2.57.109 which is the latest one. Still no option to move pictures to another or new person although the app tells me I can move pictures. In this particular example there are 4 (four!) different kids recognized as one and the same. image0.png

Hey folks,

Our engineering team would like to take a closer look into this for you and others who may be affected by this. You can send them a feedback report that includes system logs by following the steps here. Thanks for helping our investigation!

Brad

I have tried the process, the menu "recognition and sharing" is available on other devices like our home hub/screen but it isn't available when I hold the doorbell tile. It opens the Nest app and that's just not an option?

Am I misunderstanding which tile I should be using?

Hi there,

Just checking in to see how the conversation is going, and I wanted to see if you have followed my previous instructions for feedback on this concern.

Best regards,
Brad

I thought I had already replied that the menu option Recognition and sharing doesn't appear in the settings for the nest doorbell. It does on the hub display any of our Google minis and our other Google speaker, just not the doorbell?

Facial recognition also known as, Familiar Faces is a feature of Nest Aware. If you have Nest Aware, and are not seeing faces recognized, make sure that you are signed up for it nest aware first, and then check to see which subscription you have. Your doorbell should be able to use facial recognition. If you are experiencing further issues, I would suggest you reach out to Support for further assistance.

Best regards,

Brad

I have a nest aware subscription. The issue is very clear. The facial recognition sees our youngest daughter as her sister. As it thinks she already exists in the library and stores her as another instance of her sister there's never the opportunity to save her in the library with a name, only to delete her as wrong. Ironically several times her sister has been raised as a new person and had to be merged. It should be possible to highlight pictures and either rename them, automatically creating a new person in the library or merge them to an existing name.  This has been raised by different people at different times. As far as I am aware raising this here was me reaching out to support?

I am afraid that renaming or moving a face is not an option at this time. You can delete them all and start over again, and the program is a learning program and should be making improvements to add them to the correct user/face. Of course, this is not a perfect process. All feedback is welcomed, of course! As for this concern being addressed, we are aware of this feedback, but I have not been provided with any updates. Please keep an eye out on the forums for any further announcements or improvements made.

How can moving a face not be an option if -as in the screenshot I posted earlier- the home app clearly proposes to MOVE a picture?

I took part in the AI programme building what was essentially a google assistant in a box years ago.  Yes it is a learning program, an incredibly powerful part of a learning program is the ability to correct it when it has got something wrong.  Just telling it something is wrong without the ability to show what is considerably less helpful. Even if it can't allow you to move someone if you delete someone that has been misplaced into a recognised face folder logic dictates that the system should automatically place them in your unknown faces so you can decide then to identify them as someone you know or not and merge them with someone you know if it has misrecognised two similar people you "know".  This is all fairly basic and should have been highlighted if the system had a usability assessment carried out by an experienced MMI practitioner? I know the answer is that it doesn't do this now, but as this is a subscription service it would be nice to know that whoever this is funding is trying to provide what the subscribers want, i.e. for it to work as advertised.

Great to hear!
Can I have a reset of my Nest Aware trial period so I can properly test it before deciding to buy in? I was excited about it at first but when I noticed there was no move nor merge functionality, my enthusiasm quickly dropped. If now this has been fixed, I would like to give it a real try-before-you-buy.

I’d like that too… unfortunately my Nest Aware trial period has ended end thus I can no longer make use of facial recognition…. Not fair if you think about it: it never worked properly so I haven’t had an honest opportunity to test it. Not a hair on my head would pay for a service that simply doesn’t do what Google says it does.

Wake me up if Google is ever planning on doing something about this. Now I’ve got a posh, expensive doorbell which hasn’t got any added value over the cheap Chinese doorbell I had before.

I’ve been going through this group of communications and have yet to see anything that even remotely looks like an answer.

There was a reply on Thursday saying that move was being added.

Hi there,

I apologize for my late response and thank you for all of your patience while waiting for a reply. I'm terribly sorry to hear that you're having these troubles. I understand how upsetting this could be, but I'm happy to assist you with this obstacle. It sounds like you have done quite a bit of troubleshooting already, but as facial recognition in these cams is basically an automated process, we really can't troubleshoot it too much. I have a troubleshooting guide you can use to see what else can be done. Please let us know how it goes.

Best Regards,
Brad
