Nest Aware Price Jump

DJHussey
Community Member

Just got my email notification. 25% increase from $120 to $150/year?  I don't think so.  Looks like I'll cancel before my renewal, have no cloud storage for now until I find a more reasonable alternative.

If you're going to raise prices that much, give us some reason to stay with the service.

@DJHussey

Yes, but it's also the first price increase since the Nest Aware and Nest Aware Plus subscription plans (covering all cameras in the same Google Nest "home/structure") were first introduced in May 2020.

https://www.xda-developers.com/google-launches-nest-aware-subscription-service/

Not sure that's relevant since they could have increased with the COL every year since 2020 and still not be this expensive.

@sundrop74

Maybe not quite as expensive, no. With cost of living increases of 1.2% in 2020, 4.7% in 2021, 8.0% in 2022, and 4.0% (projected) in 2023, the price would be $142.81 rather than $150.

Not true.  Investigation needed.  Use Google search 😂

@Jdmaharg

I did use Google search, but I can't find the source I used in my earlier post. However, the U.S. Social Security Administration's Cost of Living Adjustments were higher: 1.3% in 2020, 5.9% in 2021, and 8.7% in 2022. With the 3% increase economists are estimating for 2024, that would yield a price of $146.55.

Terrific. Silicon valley salute you. 😆

how many consumer goods went up in price 60% after remaining stable for 3 years?

and how many of those increases outraged consumers, who were able to recognize corporate price gouging when they saw it?

I've just cancelled my subscription. To me the price at the moment is not worth it let alone making the price higher. Enough is enough.

Price increases are usually tied to something specific ( like fuel costs for truckers etc).  Storage prices decline year over year. Internet prices are down, and speeds up.  Industrial and office spaces are generally decreasing in prices ( depending on location).  All that couples with no additional new features reported makes this seem like a poor deal for the customer.  Don't also forget that Nest Aware was already either the highest or near highest subscription price compared to competitors.  All just my opinion.

Its due to a failure in the administration running this country!

You must be a contortionist with stretching like that. lol

there's no need to interject that nonsense here.

I too am impatient with the fact that we're still using 2 apps for our cameras two years after buying a battery camera, and with the fact that the Google Home app still lacks features of the Google Nest app.

However, with cost of living increases of 1.2% in 2020, 4.7% in 2021, 8.0% in 2022, and 4.0% (projected) in 2023, the annual U.S. price for Nest Aware Plus would be $142.81, not too much below the $150 we will start paying for Nest Aware Plus in June 2024 when our next annual payment is due.

Why are you upping the price I can barely afford it now and then going to jack it up to $80 plus tax yeah will be going to another company

The transition from Nest to Google Home has been a long and arduous process filled with frustration... now this.  I've been looking for alternatives.  This just kickstarted that effort.  Goodbye evil Google.

  • You may have answered it inadvertently.  Kickstarter might be the way to go.  8K doorbell with unlimited backup. 200 bucks flat initial purchase and that's it. Tell me you couldn't own a million 15 GB email addresses and make that work for free on their servers. Poetic.

Absolute rubbish 👎. Jacking up the subscription prices 30-40%.  Guess those data centers are getting more expensive!  Guys, Apple looks better every year.

Goodbye Google.  Last straw.

What increase? I just bought a bunch of their cameras in the 'sale'. They are jacking up the prices already? That is disgusting

Which Apple service will you be using to replace Nest Aware? I’m interested.

Applesauce

Apples HomeKit provides many similar features.

I haven't bothered to figure them out as a replacement, until google provided this new motivation.

My Aware subscriptions expire next July and August, so I cancelled them today and will start exploring.

i just paid the $60 yearly fee for my nest/google outdoor cam on july 11th 2023. i just received an email that service has gone up to $80 a year & that i will be charged on november 6th for my new subscription! my subscription is good until july 11th 2024. anyone else know what's going on or how to talk to a representative about this issue? TIA

RS1029

maybe i should switch to ring since there is no way to talk with a person about this issue?

@RS1029

Since your annual subscription goes until July 2024, I don't think you'll have to pay $80 until your subscription comes up for renewal in July 2024. At least that's how I read this statement in the email: "This new price increase will go into effect on your next bill that occurs on or after November 6, 2023." Ours is paid through June 2024.  That seems like the only fair way to interpret what's happening, especially since the annual subscriptions are non-refundable.

thank you so very much 🙂

Hello RS1029,

I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble with this. No worries; we'll check this out. If you just renewed your Nest Aware subscription this year before the price change, your Nest Aware subscription charge will be the same until you renew your subscription next year.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

Best,
Edmond

It's poorly worded, but you're fine until next July.

Any renewals from November 6 on will be at the new rate, but yours won't renew until July.

you can also cancel your plan now, and it will still go until next July. Avoiding an accidental renewal next summer.

Hirsch22

so if I’m reading your response correctly about the nest aware subscription .

if I just paid my annual subscription by way of an auto pay this past july 2023 then my price / subscription is all set till renewal comes around agin next july 2024 !! Correct !
I can  still go in somewhere at nest or google and cancel the nest subscription now if I choose so they won’t be able to renew a 2024 subscription with out my permission , right?
I realize I’ll still have shabby service with no archive storage of my 24/7 live stream for 5 day rotations still ( my whole purpose of having the service) and no home/ away from home service .
so when a person travels away from home we can’t in the evening sit at a hotel and replay all of the days video feed to see what has gone on at home or at my door entry way with delivery’s .
I want a camera that can provide me with event detection / and 24/7 live and stored archive history video feed for 5 days again .
I have the 1st gen nest indoor cameras (3 pak ) that I’ve got plugged into outlets with my nest iPhone app .

I am in the EXACT situation and not sure why it will go up in November when my annual renewal is in July, what's going on

@tuffnca

Since our annual subscriptions are prepaid and non-refundable, and since Google Nest said "This new price increase will go into effect on your next bill that occurs on or after November 6, 2023.", I don't think you will need to pay the increased price until yours renews in July.  Ours renews in June.

I agree with you. It is a 25% increase for NOTHING, no added value. It is up to us to show whether or not we believe it is worth that.
I waited almost 2 hours to be connected to someone that told me the increase is because they are pricing it at a level that they believe reflects the value.
The worst part is that I am trying to cancel and they will not cancel the subscription, they only cancel the auto-renewal so no refund on the leftover time. I looked through the terms of services and there is nothing in the policy that stipulates we cannot cancel the service.
I have placed a complaint in the BBB
I am filing an FTC complaint next week and I am in the phone with Amex to try to get the charge disputed.

whoa, that's messed up! how did you get to talk to someone? the number i found was disconnected. i think i am going to get a new cam with another company when my subscription is done in july 2024.

thank you

keep in mind that your subscription expires in July like mine but they are going to increase it by November, interesting ???

Sue3333

My subscription is also to expire July 2024 .I paid $110.
 So I’ll have to go find my email notice again and see when they want to increase mine to )$180 annually .
they should not charge us prior to renewal in July 2024 .

chat. Had to wait close to two hours... Premium service we are getting as paid customers

It's the total lack of effort makes it more insulting for me. They can't even be bothered to get the old nest hardware to work with the new app. Hilariously they just announced the first ever nest camera is now working, why not the others?? This isn't some weird overly complicated piece of technology ITS A CAMERA, they all work the same way!!

2nd increase in two years after we bought the hardware.  Insulting and frustrating.  Despite sunk cost in hardware, some things are worth switching over principle alone.  Wake up Google.
