New Cameras dont work with Nest App

I just wanted to yell into the void, in hopes that someone with half a brain from Google may actually do something about this for stuck consumers. I will be leaving the service, but for those of you who are stuck, maybe this will help.

Let me ask a question, you are a large company who cannot figure out a good home camera app. You buy a company people love so you can get into the market. Would you A) allow new hardware to be used on the legacy app with full features that people love or B) force people to use your own crappy app with less features, while simultaneously supporting the legacy app you currently own?

This is the most inexplicable decision I can remember a business making. Be warned, if you have legacy Nest products and are thinking about using your hard earned money to buy a new one, you will not be able to use it on the Nest app you currently use and love. You will be forced to use a less feature rich and confusing google home app, despite the fact that the old app is still being supported and used.

Hi @krobins!

Thanks for reaching out to the community. I'm sorry to hear that you cannot control the Nest camera on the Nest app. But do not worry; I am happy to help you fix this issue. To assist you better, I have some questions for you:

  • What model of Nest camera do you have?
  • When did the issue start?
  • Are you getting any error messages?
  • How far is the camera from the router?
  • Do you have other Nest devices in the house?
  • Are there other devices connected to the same Wi-Fi where the camera is connected?
  • Can the camera find other Wi-Fi networks?

I'll be waiting for your response; any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Best regards,
Jeremy.

I am having the same issue.  I just bought a 2nd generation Nest Indoor Camera.  I manage all of my cameras through the Nest app, but it will not let me add this camera.  The camera is connected to the same wifi network as the app.  I have multiple Nest cameras and the thermostat.

@lallbritton

Unfortunately, as @krobins pointed out, the 2nd gen Google Nest cameras and doorbells (released starting in Sept. 2021) cannot be installed in the Google Nest app, but ONLY in the Google Home app.

We discovered this when we bought the 2nd gen Google Nest Battery Camera in Sept. 2021 (because the Google Nest Outdoor Camera had just been discontinued). We've been using 2 apps ever since.

Hi there!

Thanks for reaching out to the community.I'm sorry to hear that you cannot add the 2nd generation Nest Indoor camera in the Nest app. I also appreciate all the efforts you've been making to resolve this inconvenience @lallbritton@krobins, @MplsCustomer. In order to identify which Nest camera you have with the information below:

Use the Google Home app to set up the following Nest cameras:

  • Nest Cam (wired)
  • Nest Cam with Floodlight
  • Nest Cam (battery)

Use the Nest app to set up the following Nest cameras:

  • Nest Cam IQ Indoor
  • Nest Cam IQ Outdoor
  • Nest Cam Indoor
  • Nest Cam Outdoor

Additionally, I'd like to share with you the following link that will help you with the setup. Set up and connect the Nest camera.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jeremy.

We’ve encountered the same issue and share the frustration. We’ve always loved the Nest app for its clean, intuitive, and user-friendly interface, which made managing our Nest cameras seamless. Over the years, we’ve continued to invest in Nest cameras, now branded under Google, because of the excellent experience the app provided.

However, discovering that these devices are now limited to the Google Home app has been a significant disappointment. While we understand the move towards integrating ecosystems, the Google Home app falls short of the usability and simplicity that made the Nest app stand out.

We urge Google to take note of the consistent feedback from loyal users. Many of us purchased these products because of the outstanding functionality of the Nest app. A more user-centric approach—either bringing the Nest app’s functionality into the Google Home app or maintaining the Nest app as an option—would go a long way in retaining trust and loyalty within the community.

Please prioritize the voices of your dedicated users as you continue to evolve your product ecosystem. A responsive approach to feedback is a hallmark of great innovation.
