Nest Protect Room Name Incorrect

Recently purchased 6 protect gen 2s and noticed an issue while testing. If you set off the alarm it announces one of two ways. Either it says "there's smoke in the [name of protect your listening to]" which shouldn't it be the name of the alarming protect? Say if the living room protect us alarming, shouldn't the other protects say "there's smoke in the living room"? This doesn't seem to be the case for me. Other times it's say something ambiguous like "there's smoke in one room"... Great, WHICH room?

You're correct, it should be stating the name of the room where the detector was activated, NOT where you're listening. Are you able to test each detector to see that they're reporting the correct rooms? (Im not home now, but I can see that each detector I have shows a room name and not much else.) You could turn off the "pathlight" feature on one detector at a time to help confirm the rooms show up properly.

Now if all the detectors are going off and reporting their own room as the alarm location, that is a serious issue.

If you are within your return period, i would personally recommend (i'm not a google employee) returning them all to replace with another system.

The overall lack of responsiveness or support (or even acknowledgement of issues) by Google of these LIFE SAFETY devices shows neglect and reckless disregard and has successfully eroded customer trust.

I think our best bet as a customer base is to make these problems known outside Google, so a trend can be established. Could you please take a moment to report this issue to the Consumer Product Safety Commission at: https://www.saferproducts.gov/IncidentReporting

Hi everyone,

@hyperdrive360, thanks for reaching out here in the Community. To know more about this issue, I’d like to confirm, do you have a Nest Protect with the same name or label? Have you tried renaming your Nest Protects? Try going to the settings of your Nest Protect and look for the "Where" or "Placement" option and rename it there. Looking forward to your response.

I appreciate you for chiming in, DanCoco.

Regards,

Emerson

Hey hyperdrive360,

I'm dropping by to ensure that everything is covered here. How's it going with your Nest Protect? We would appreciate it if you could share the information I’m asking above. Also, were you able to perform the steps I’m suggesting? We'd be glad to hear from you.

Thanks,
Emerson

Hello hyperdrive360,

Just one final check in here since activity has slowed down. We'll be locking the thread in the next 24 hours, but if you still need help, we would be happy to keep it open. If there's more we can do, just let us know.

Best,
Emerson

Please keep this open. There have been multiple reports of detectors alerting to the wrong room where each detector states its own room name instead of the alerting room. A misnamed detector should not cause this bug as all detectors would simply report the misnamed room.

This is a safety hazard.

Hi EmersonB, I have two Protects using the "Bedroom" option with labels of exactly which bedroom. Then I have a Protect using the "Master Bedroom" option. Then another Protect using the "Hallway" option. Lastly a Protect using the "Kitchen" option. The only ones with custom labels are the "Bedroom" Protects. When testing I confirmed that regardless of the triggering Protect, the other Protects will say their own name.

Example:

Hallway triggers on smoke.

Master Bedroom says "Emergency, there's smoke, in the master bedroom"

OR sometimes it will say

"Emergency there's smoke, in ONE room"
