Nest Protect says sensor has failed only during high humidity

Hello, my Nest protect seems to work fine until we open the windows on a humid day. At that point the Nest Protect usually chirps and says there's a problem with the sensor. As soon as we close the windows and run the AC to reduce the humidity, the error goes away. Is there anyway to fix this problem??

Hi Nestuva,

Thanks for posting in the Community! Sorry to hear that every time you open the window the Nest Protect chirps. No worries, help is here! Please provide the following information to get the right troubleshooting for you:

  1. What Nest Protect model do you have?
  2. Is it doing a single chirp every 60 seconds?
  3. Have you replaced the batteries? Nest Protect requires Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA (L91) batteries.
  4. Is the Nest Protect near any air vents, fans, windows, or other sources of air flow that could bring dust or foreign particles into the detection chamber?
  5. When was the last audio test?
  6. Where is the Nest Protect installed (room, ceiling, or wall)?

Keep me posted.

Regards,
Axel.

Hello,

model-2nd gen

Chirp every 60 seconds

i have tried replacing batteries with those specific batteries (I only use those since they are recommended)

no, it is in the middle of the room

it does an audio check monthly and passes no problem

its installed in our living room, dining room, kitchen area on the ceiling

To reiterate, it seems to be directly related to humidity levels in the room

We had this issue with the Nest Protects in our basement storage room in the summer of 2022 and 2023. If we kept the door closed to that room, the humidity in the room would get high and one or both would alert. I was able to mitigate this by running a dehumidifier in there. There's a sump pump in this room which likely enhances the humidity.

This past summer (2024), I just kept the door open to the room since a dehumidifier running 24/7 uses a lot of electricity. Neither unit in that room ever complained of a problem. That would seem to confirm these things are humidity-sensitive for sure.
