Nest protect false alarming…

I have multiple nest protects in my house, and recently one has started having an issue where it false alarms. A “smoke” alarm will go off and then a few seconds later, it clears. Always the same detector. Never anything in the area,  I suspect the unit is faulty.  What is my next step?

Nest Protect Smoke detectors have an expiration date printed on the back of them,  The first thing to do is check that date as it may be past that date in which case you just have to replace it with a new one.

After that I think your best bet is to open a support ticket which will let you  speak with a Google Tech person.  I believe they will be able to go in and look a the log of the alerts and make a determination for you and possible replace it.

I too have the same issue with one of my units. Just started today.  Units are 8 years old. Never had an issue with them until now.

Definitely not expired. Only installed in the last 3 years…

Installed sure, but they could have already been older units in the retail channel before you purchased them. Happens a lot. Check the expiry date to be certain. You can also check the date in the app. Click settings then choose a Protect, then click Technical info and look for Replace By

When this occurs, what, if any audible messages do you get?  If something is detected it should speak to the effect of "smoke,,,,in the kitchen".  What do you get on the "nightly promise"?  If a unit is close to, or at End of Life, you will never get a green nightly promise, but a much longer yellow promise.
