Protects stuck in "battery replacement" warning mode.

I have 6 battery powered 2nd Gen Nest Protect. These have always worked perfectly.

Recently I got a bettery warning for one of them. This was shown by a warning in the app, plus when the lights were turned off in any room with a Protect in it, it flashed yellow - pressing the button indicated the battery needed replacing in the kitchen.

I went ahead and swapped these out, and its now all showing as "green" in the app. However the other 5 Protects continue to flash yellow and warn about the batteries in that unit needing replacing. I've held the button down on that and other units to do a network check, and I even removed the kitchen Protect from the account and re-added it, and I'm getting the same thing.

I'm a bit stuck what to do now - the flashing light makes is distracting in a bedroom so I've had to take those down, plus of course I don't want them in a seemingly unhealthy state.

Hi Nuuki,

Yikes! If you have replaced the batteries in your Nest Protect units and they are still flashing yellow and indicating that the batteries need to be replaced, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Double-check that the batteries are properly inserted in each Nest Protect unit. Make sure they are aligned correctly and securely seated.
  2. Ensure you are using fresh, high-quality batteries that are compatible with your Nest Protect units. Sometimes, using expired or low-quality batteries can cause false warnings or issues with battery detection.
  3. Try performing a restart on the Nest Protect units by pressing and holding the button on each device until it turns off and then turns back on. This can help reset the device and clear any temporary glitches.
  4. Check the network connectivity of your Nest Protect units. Ensure that they are properly connected to your Wi-Fi network and that they have a stable internet connection. Poor connectivity can sometimes cause issues with battery reporting and communication.
  5. Check if there are any available firmware updates for your Nest Protect units. Updating to the latest firmware version can sometimes resolve software-related issues and improve overall performance.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi Zoe,

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay - just finalising our house move. Here's a response to your points:

  1. The batteries in the single Nest that needed new ones looks to be fine - they're certainly correctly inserted. None of the other 5 units have been changed, and have worked for years.
  2. Again, the new batteries look good - when I check the info for the unit in the Nest app its showing them as green.
  3. I've tried resetting both the unit that needed a battery change, and another one. The unit that had its batteries changed is working 100% fine - no reports of issues. Every other unit still flashes yellow, even after a reset.
  4. I'm confident the network is good - I have a background in networking and there's strong wifi throughout the house. The units themselves don't stay connected (to save batteries I assume) but I can see stats for them and they have a strong signal. Even if one unit had had some issue in this area, it clearly wouldn't affect all 5.
  5. I've checked the Google support page and confirmed they're running the latest version.

Having already tried resets I'm at a bit of a loss. Is there a way to delete the entire house in Nest and re-start? I wouldn't want to do that every time any unit needs its batteries changed, but in terms of where I am now, I need to get back to a state when every unit isn't flashing yellow and giving me warnings.

Hey everyone,

@Nuuki, thanks for circling back and sharing your updates. Let’s check it out.

After Nest Protect is paired or processes a software update, Nest Protect will calibrate its sensors and battery level over the next 24 hours. Leave the original batteries in the Nest Protect for now. If the low battery alert ceases after 24 to 48 hours, it’s expected behavior.

If the issue persists, please follow the steps below:

  1. Go to your Nest Protect and press the Nest button on it once. It should say, “Ready. Press to test.”
  2. Press and hold the button until it chimes and says “Version number…”.

You can also use the Nest app to get the Nest Protect’s version number.

Open the Nest app > Go to Settings Settings > select the affected Nest Protect > tap Technical info > look for the version number.

To further assist you, please provide the Nest Protect’s software version.

Keep me posted.

I appreciate your help, Zoe.

All the best,

Lance
