I've always understood that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors should NOT be installed in or near bathrooms and kitchens to avoid false alarms. If you do an internet search, you'll find all kinds of recommendations on this.

Google Nest recommends the following:

"Move Protect away from sources of steam

Steam can also trigger false alarms in many smoke alarms. Common household sources of steam include showers and humidifiers. So if you’ve experienced a false alarm and your Nest Protect is placed near a source of steam, this may be the cause."

We don't have Nest Protects, but none of our smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors are close to our kitchen or bathrooms.

There is an option on the configuration page for Protect in the Nest App.

  1. Press the gear in the upper right corner.
  2. Select Protects at the bottom of the page.
  3. Select which Protect you are having the problem with.
  4. Select the Steam Check option and turn it on.

This isn't perfect, but it should decrease the false alarms caused by steam

It in the hallway where old smoke detector was and that's where hardwire is for power.

I wouldn't want any smoke detector or carbon monoxide detector in the hallway outside either of our bathrooms.

First Alert, for example, recommends: "Avoid humid areas. Install your alarm at least 10 feet (3 meters) from common sources of humidity:

* shower
* bath
* sauna
* humidifier
* vaporizer or diffuser
* dishwasher
* laundry room
* utility room"

ADT suggests "When installing a carbon monoxide detector, make sure you: Install them away from the kitchen, bathroom, sunny spots, or open windows since humidity could interfere with the sensors."
