Unable to set up new Nest Protect - Error P009 (0.80)

winterwolfes

I just got my first Nest Protect to replace the old smoke detector in my kitchen that died this week.

I am unable to connect it to my account. I keep getting error: P009 (0.80) We're currently Unable to add this Nest Protect to your account. Please try again in a few hours.

It goes through the whole process and gets to the screen where it says "Finishing Up. Adding to your nest account." And then I get that error.

I factory reset the device and restarted my phone. Nothing works. Need some help!

Hi @winterwolfes

See if anything in this help article specific to that P009 error helps: Troubleshoot a P009 Nest Protect message - Google Nest Help

Let us know if you are still having trouble though!

Thanks for replying. I just went through all of the troubleshooting and advanced troubleshooting steps and I still get error P009 at the end of the setup.

I know that moving the protects closer to the router may help for set up. If possible see if that works.

I will also escalate your posts over to our Community Specialists. I have a feeling you may need some further support on this issue.

Thanks for trying and updating us!

Tried that to. I was sitting right next to the router but got the same error.

Hello there,

I’m sorry to hear about the situation and for the delay in response. We’d like to take a look at this for you. Could you please fill out this form with the needed information?

Thanks for your help, @JillG

Best,
Zoe

Just filled out the form! Thanks, hope we can fix this. I am going on a week without any smoke alarm protection in the downstairs of my house which is a major issue because this Nest Protect cannot connect to my existing account. I keep seeing feedback about having to set up a new home. I can't do that because I have 92 smart devices in my house and dozens of integrations, routines and automations. There is no way I can start from scratch just because a Nest product just isn't compatible with an existing account. If that is the case, I will just have to return it and go buy another dumb alarm.

I found a fix (at least for me) and it worked immediately. What I had been instructed to do was move as close to the router as I could during the install. I was literally placing the Nest Protect next to the router and I just kept getting the error. Then I saw people saying you had to uninstall any other Nest doorbells or cameras, which I did not want to do, but it  made me think maybe if the Nest Protect is trying to connect through my doorbell, I need to move it closer to the doorbell. I walked outside and placed it right up against the doorbell. Th doorbell came up on the app while I was going through the connection process and the Nest Protect connected right away to my account. So if you have another Nest camera or doorbell. Try placing your Nest Project right on top of it and then start the connection process. It seems like the Nest Protect tries to connect to your account through existing devices instead of going through your router. Problem solved (for me)!
