2nd gen Heatlink not working

EmmaG24

This morning, my thermostat started displaying a H71 error.  Everything was working fine last night and nothing has been moved or changed.  I have a 2nd generation thermostat.  There aren't any lights showing on the heat link.  I've tried resetting the heat link, resetting the thermostat but when it rebooted the error message was still there and still NO lights on the heat link. There is 240v at the heat link.

Please advise if a new heat link is needed and if so, should I get a 2nd or 3rd generation model?

With thanks

Hi @EmmaG24

Based on your description, a faulty heat link is the most likely culprit for the H71 error on your Nest thermostat. Here's what you can do:

Further Troubleshooting:

  • Distance and Wireless Connection: Double-check that your thermostat and Heat Link are close together (ideally in the same room) and there are no walls or metal objects in the way. You can also run a test on your thermostat to verify the connection with the Heat Link following Nest's instructions: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9225726?hl=en

  • Wireless Interference: Temporarily turn off other wireless devices in your house, like cordless phones or baby monitors, to see if they're interfering with the signal.

Replacing the Heat Link:

  • Warranty Check: See if your Heat Link is still under warranty (usually 2 years). If it is, contact Nest support to initiate a replacement process: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp?hl=en
  • Out-of-Warranty: If the warranty has expired, you'll need to purchase a new Heat Link. Nest sells replacements directly, or you might find them from authorized retailers.

Heat Link Generation:

  • Compatibility: While both 2nd and 3rd generation Heat Links should work with your 2nd generation Nest thermostat, it's best to confirm compatibility with Nest support. They can advise you on the best option based on your specific thermostat model.

Additional Tips:

  • Avoid opening the Heat Link or tampering with any electrical wiring yourself. If you're not comfortable with troubleshooting steps, consult a qualified heating engineer.

I hope this information helps you resolve the H71 error and get your heating system back up and running!
