We inherited a Nest 3G thermostat when we bought our house earlier this year. It was working fine as the winter ended but has been dormant during the summer months. It now won't work - there is a green and orange alternating flashing light. If I press and hold for 10 seconds, it starts to show date/time need resetting but, before I can enter them, the thermostat shuts down.
Removing the thermostat from the base and re-attaching it doesn't help.
There are only two wires connected into the base at W1 and RH, both seem ok although the RH is showing not detected. I have tried connecting the unit to a wall charger via USB in case something needs rebooting but nothing working. Help please!
Edit to above message:
In searching the internet, it appears the thermostats do not like stranded wire connections. Our thermostat wire is old, a little on the thick side, and stranded. Although it appeared that the wires were located into the thermostat connections, they must have been only partial / some strands. I took out the wires, connected some extension pieces to the original wiring using single core light gauge wire, and then put the single core wires into the thermostat. It now works!

I found out the incoming thermostat wire was too large for the receiving connector. I joined another piece of smaller gauge wire to the incoming thermostat wire, then fed the extended wire into the socket. It now works.
