3rd gen learning thermostat screen backlight comes on but doesn't display info

Sorry - no one category fits my question.

My thermostat has been installed and worked fine for about 9 months.   A couple of months ago it  started lighting up when I near it or press on the display, but no info displays.   I was still able to control the thermostat using the app.  A couple of weeks ago, it started behaving as if the app was controlling it, but either never received the command or it set itself back to the previous state within a few minutes.   Now it seems as if the app is not controlling it at all, although when I get into the app settings it says it's connected.

Do I just need to bite the bullet and replace the whole thing?   Or is there some exercise for testing it?

The best idea would be to get the retailer to replace or repair! 9 months old would  be the retailers responsibility.

I would also try a restart by pressing the display against the wall, keep pressed until you see the house, IF you see the house appear due to your circumstances, then release. Takes about 30 seconds.
