AC options disappeared after the winter

Hot day yesterday (103).  Went to turn on the AC late in the afternoon and the Nest Thermostat only displayed the heat option, which is odd because we used the ac last summer.  Reading up on a few posts you can change the option from Heat to Cold.  My Nest only had Heat or Off.... no cold and/or no cold and heat.  Watching more videos of Nest 4 wire issues and adding a common wire, so I went up into my sweat box attic to review what wires were actually connected to the heater: I have 5 wires but the common(blue) was not hooked up as expected.  I deleted the Thermostat from Google home app and then adding it back with 4 wire, with 5 wire setup (connected the common on the Nest side only) no help.... can you tell I'm getting dispirit trying the 5 wire 🙂 Digging in the device while setting up the 5 wire option: it showed that the blue common wire and White wire were not recognized.  A clue.  I get why the common wasn't recognized, but the white wire is for the ac so made sure the white was inserted all the way and plenty of the wire was stripped. Still no go.....Giving up in frustration for the night I reached for a couple of my wife's homemade cookies and then crashed for the sweaty night.  Did I mention that the original setup was "janky", but Thank goodness for others that post their videos.  Early this am with renewed energy I saw a post that suggested to make sure the inserted wires are straight and tucked into the wall well.  I deleted the device from Google home again, straightened the inserted wires and tucked them well and started the Nest Thermostat setup again.  You guessed it, It worked.... was it father time or what?   My Lesson learned: Straighten them wires and makes sure the extra wire is tucked well into the wall....and if all fails, have a cookie 🙂  For Nest - current support and GUI setup process needs to be better.  Now I need to get nest smarter when the windows are open.... hopefully connecting my alarm system will make this happen.

Hi Ronstr9387,

Thanks for sharing the steps that resolved your issue. It's possible that your Nest Thermostat wasn't detecting Y wire and making sure that they're seated properly would resolve it. Please observe it for now and let us know if anything comes up.

Thanks,

Edward

Too bad the Nest doesn't have a built in scanning feature that says....We noticed that you had an AC and it is no longer connected... is that correct?

Hi Ronstr9387,

Thanks for the response. Usually if the wiring has changed, you'll get a message saying that the wiring has changed. We can't tell right now why you didn't get the message but I suggest observing it for now.

Thanks,

Edward
