Added C wire but Nest indicates that it is connected by not wired correctly

I noticed one of my Nests was offline.  It did not have a common wire.  I charged the Nest using a USB and used an unused wire going to the thermostat to provide the common.  The red wire on the transformer connects to the red going to the thermostat, so I attached the terminal with the white wire on the transformer to the unused wire going to the Nest.  I then connected that to the Nest C wire.  The next gave me an error A79, indicating a C wire, but it was not connected to anything.  I checked the transformer, and it was producing 26 volts.  I went to the thermostat, and there were 26 volts between the Rh and C wires.  I checked the C wire, stripped 3/8 of an inch, and seated it in the thermostat hole.  After several tries at reseating the C wire and getting the A79 error, I tried a second nest thermostat on the base, and it got the same error.  I can only figure out that the base may be defective.   Any ideas? I  have nine Nests installed so I may try swapping bases to verify the problem before buying a new base.

I found this video that explains how to add a common wire when using a two-transformer system. If the heating and cooling systems are separate, the common wire must come from the cooling system.

Hi ,

Thanks for reaching out to the community. I am sorry that you are having issues with your thermostat, but no need to worry; help is here.

We appreciate all of your previous troubleshooting efforts to connect with our community. I am aware that you do not have a c wire attached and that your thermostat was offline. I need to know a few things about your thermostat in order to provide you with a better resolution.

  • What Nest thermostat model do you have? For your reference, you can check out this article on How to Tell Which Nest Thermostat You Have.
  • Does the thermostat display show any error codes or messages?
  • When did the issue first occur?
  • When was the thermostat installed?
  • "What is the make and model of your HVAC equipment?
  • How long did you charge the thermostat with a USB cable?
  • Do you see a blinking LED light? If so, is it red or green?
  • Is your thermostat still offline?

I'll be waiting for your response; any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Best regards,

Gabriela
