Adding a 3rd Generation thermostat to google home

PaulBurden
Community Member

OK I have a 3rd Generation Nest Thermostat. I have installed the Nest app and I am connected to the thermostat as owner. If I try to add family members, it tells me I have to use the Google Home app. The family members are already there in Google Home, but the Google Home app can't see the thermostat :-(. Searching the community does reveal a solution. Anyone got any ideas?

TIA

Paul

Hi

OK I have solved the problem. The issue was that in Google Home there were two Homes with the same name! I an not sure how this happened or why Google home allowed it to happen. They were linked in some way, because when I changed the name of one in an effort to eliminate this very problem, it changed the name of both! I realised that there were two when my wife and son installed the Nest app and could see the thermostat and each other and indeed me as owner, but I couldn't see them. I then did some more digging in Google Home and found the duplication. Once I had worked out which was the "wrong one" and removed it , everything worked as expected.

@PaulBurden

Are you logging onto the Google Nest app and the Google Home app using the same Google account and password? Are you accessing the same Google Nest "home/structure" in both the Google Nest app and the Google Home app? If so, when you go to Settings | Family in the Google Nest app you should see the same family members that are in the Google Home app. If you go to the home.nest.com website and select Settings | Family, can you see the family members?

I believe that I am accessing the same structure although I am not sure how to check. The rest of the family are already members of the Google Home app home, but don't appear in the Nest app.

If I try and add the Nest Thermostat to the Google Home app I get stuck after entering  the six character code from the back of the thermostat. It asks me to "Choose the last four characters of your device's serial number" but doesn't offer any way to input these 😞

@PaulBurden

The 3rd generation Nest Thermostat gets installed ONLY in the Google Nest app (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9274936?hl=en#zippy=%2Ccomplete-installation-instructio...). It cannot also be "installed" in the Google Home app. However, once installed in the Google Nest app, it should also appear in and be controllable from the Google Home app (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9249866?hl=en).

However, this is not true if you started using the Google Nest app on or before August 19, 2019 and have NOT migrated your Google Nest Account to a Google Account (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9297676?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid); in this case you would have to migrate your account.

In the Google Nest app, the name of your "home/structure" appears on the initial screen under the word "Home". In the Google Home app, the name of your "home/structure" appears at the top of the initial screen.  (If you have multiple "homes/structures", there's a dropdown that lets you select the "home/structure" you wish to access.)

I suppose there could possibly be some delay on the Google Nest servers that is causing the family members to not show up yet in the Google Nest app. Did you try going to home.nest.com and check under Settings | Family to see if your family members appear there?

Hi

Thanks for taking time to respond. I have the 3rd generation nest thermostat , it is installed in my Nest App installed today and linked to my google account. However it hasn't appeared in the Google Home App (which is why I tried and failed to install it via the Google Home App). Any idea how to get the Thermostat tile to appear in Google Home?

Sorry I should have also said that I have checked that both "Homes" have the same name. Also I have looked at home.nest.com and there are no family members listed there.

@PaulBurden

Ahh, I thought, from your first post, that it was only your family members who could not see the thermostat in the Google Home app.

What you're describing should not be possible. If you are logging onto the Google Nest app and Google Home app with the same Google account and password and you cannot see the same family members in the Google Nest app that you see in the Google Home app, and if you cannot see the Nest thermostat in the Google Home app that you see in the Google Nest app, it seems the two apps are not seeing the same data as they should be automatically.

I don't know why. As I said earlier, perhaps it's due to some sort of delay on the Google Nest servers.

I wonder whether signing off of the Google Nest app and then signing back on would trigger the connection.  And/or signing off of home.nest.com and signing  back on.
