Adding c-wire

JasonM1

I'm trying to connect my Nest thermostat. I bought it because it doesn't need a C-wire. The Nest Power Connector is basically the same thing.  I rent an apartment and they don't allow c-wire installation. Probably because the wiring on the board at the HVAC unit is connected to R, G, W, and C, but not to Y.

Do I have any options besides returning this?

@JasonM1

That wiring doesn't make sense.

Can you post a picture of the original thermostat and the HVAC control board wiring here.

There is an unused blue wire at the thermostat, but it has been cut somewhere along the way.

Hi JasonM1,

Thank you for posting in the community! I'm happy to assist you with your Nest thermostat compatibility concerns regarding the common wire.

@Ashepherdson, Thanks for your input. I also appreciate all the information you've provided, @JasonM1. Based on the pictures, it seems you have a common wire installed on the control board, which is the yellow wire. To provide the most accurate guidance, please confirm the following:

  • Do you have a heating-only or heating and cooling system?
  • Could you please share the make and model of your HVAC system?

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

It's heating and cooling. The yellow wire on the C terminal is not the same yellow wire as the one at the thermostat.

I had a friend stop by and get it working. Thank you for the response.
