Hi
New to Nest here... Just installed the Nest in our house and whenever I turn the breaker back on the heater turns on immediately. If I remove the red wire it doesn't turn on, so I know it is getting voltage to red. Here is my wiring. Called the original HVAC installers but they were clueless or didn't want to help. I'm believing that the device is not defective but of course it could be. The wiring that I did was based on the suggestion of the thermostat and I've re-added it many times thinking maybe it wasn't set correctly. Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks,
Joe

Hi @tornado - I had this same issue. Once it's installed and connected to the Home app, it does default to "on". I had to go into the thermostat tile in the home app and then manually turn the heat off. Then I set the schedules up and so on.
Looks like you have everything set up perfectly otherwise!
Hope this helps,
Bill

That is a Learning Thermostat and only works with the Nest App.

Move the red wire from the Rh terminal to the Rc terminal.
Do a reset to factory default and set it up again.
If the problem is still there, then swap the yellow (Y1) wire and the white (W1) wire.
Does the Cooling turn on at power on?
If it does, then you probably have a bad base. If the heat still turns on, then the problem is with the furnace.

Ok to follow up on a few things here - I never did connect the app to it as it is actually my rental home and was hoping for a "manual-only" control of it for my tenants - based on Bill's response I will be trying the app next time I go to that house.
Per Patrick's comment - I did actually try moving Rh to Rc. I did NOT do a factory reset (yet) on it however. I can try both that, the app and swapping the Y1 and W1 wires. Cooling did power on when I tested it (I could hear the AC compressor) but again the heat didn't turn off. I will try all of these things today. Thanks again!

Finally had to throw in the towel as none of the solutions above worked. Ended up calling HVAC tech and they said that the green & white wires were somehow shorted. I would have never solved it. They ended up using 2 extra wires that were unused and it all started working. Thanks for the support above regardless everyone!
