Cannot connect my 5.79 nest thermostat to new WiFi router

Cannot connect my nest thermostat 5.79 (think gen 3) to new Wifi. Old router WiFi no problem. Google home app failed connecting.

• phone physicallyvery close.

quickly resolved and connected to WiFi.

i deleted the Google Home app.

Then I reinstalled the Google Home app, signed in and it prompted for my new WiFi network/pasword. 
Then in Google Home app:

Click on Nest Thermostat 

click on settings 

Click in Device information 

Then click on WiFi

OK

hold phone close to thermostat 

takes 30 seconds 

done

Probably in addition to new router/Wifi I also bought a new iPhone last week.

so I needed to update the Google Home app
