Cannot use Nest thermostat manually

The house I bought two years ago came with two Nest Learning thermostats installed. Initially, I didn't spend much time learning how to use them but when I did I don't like what I've found.

We prefer to set heat manually, expecting the temperature we select to be maintained throughout the night. That doesn't work. Set it to 70, it turns on and heats to 70 if not already there, we get up the next morning or in the middle of the night, and the temp is 5 to 6 degrees cooler, the temperature set to 67 or 68.

This sounds like an issue related to Eco, one that could be solved by turning off Home/Away Assist. That is off, the problem remains.

I've read a number of people complaining about this here, but no solutions. I called Nest customer support this morning and while the agent wanted to be helpful, he knew less about the problem than I did. His only suggestion was to set a Schedule. I explained that while that might work for one evening, would we need to set a different one with different temperatures for other nights? He didn't know and that's not a solution, regardless.

Is there really no way to manually set temperatures that will be maintained for however long the user wishes?

I'm posting here as a last effort to see if one of the Community Specialists might have a solution. I doubt it, based on what I've read. If not, I'll replace both thermostats with some other brand.

Even though Home/Away Assist is turned off, could the thermostats  "assume" no one's home if my phone is not turned on? Seems a stretch, particularly since I wouldn't be using it during the night anyway. I'll leave it on tonight and see what happens.

It's true that the Nest is fundamentally designed to work on a schedule, but you might be able to work around that reasonably well (I hope).  I can suggest three ideas.  ***  I hope somebody will jump in with more expertise about manual operation!   ***

1.  Although you haven't set up a schedule, the prior owner probably did.  Go into the schedule and remove all the set points (orange balls).  That might allow for purely manual operation.  (I've never tried it and can't find a help article that describes this move.)    https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/10184385?hl=en

2.  if your Nest won't work without any set points in the schedule, set up your schedule so that each day has just one set point.  Choose a time when it will be most convenient to make a change to the Nest, e.g., right before you usually go to bed or right before you usually get up.  Choose a temperature that you can tolerate from that time up until you're ready to set the temperature for real.  With that schedule, the Nest will obey your manual instructions all the time, except at that one set point it will start aiming at the scheduled temperature.

3.  Set your Nest on Eco Mode all the time.  To adjust the target temperature, go into Settings and adjust the Eco temperature.

Thanks for the response, this video solved the problem. It was clear Nest phone support had no idea what to do. This video and others like it have been out there awhile. There's also some addressing other issues that people reading this string may find useful.

Thank you for pointing this out to the forum!  It provides a simpler way to delete whatever schedule may be in your Nest.
