Checking thermostat triggers the heat to come on

It’s been cold here, and I’ve been going to the nest thermostat to check the outside temperature. Simply standing in front of the thermostat brings it to life and shows me the outside temperature, but now it also triggers the furnace to turn on. Why is that? This is happened the last five times I’ve stood in front of the thermostat to check the outside temperature. It doesn’t sound like coincidence to me.

It might be the Home/Away function.  Walking by the thermostat triggers the motion sensor and tells it you're home, besides just waking up the screen display.

Hey folks,

Thanks again for answering, jonhCNA.

@Herb3703, that is odd but jonhCNA's analogy could be the reason. Just to confirm, were there recent changes made on the settings of your thermostat prior to experiencing this issue? If there are, what are they? Also, could you provide a rundown of the steps that you've tried so we can pick up from there?

Best,

Melba

Melba: I don’t think I made any adjustments to the thermostat since replacing it last Spring. JohnCNA’s suggestion seems to have done the trick.
