I just changed thermostat to a google nest . Now the compressor comes on for a minute and the goes off. I have it on cooling and the temp is set at 72. The temp inside is at 82 now and the compressor is not running. It may come on again but it goes right off after a minute or so.

Over the last 7 years I’ve had several dealings with this and it sucks that you have to remove the thermostat and charge it to the wall. I was told by AC repairman to delete my schedule, which also sucks. I purchased a new nest gen 3 about 4 weeks ago and it worked for 3 weeks. I still have the old Gen2 and today I was able to get the temp down from 83 to 76. I did this by alternating running the AC on the Gen2 (which it’ll come on for 20min) and then powers off outside while the indoors changes over to continuous fan. Because it never takes a break this drains the battery and never is able to recharge. So, after the 20min cycle I hear the outdoor fan cut off (I have to keep a window cracked to hear it cut off, yEah which is letting heat come in as well). SonInthen charge it for maybe an hour and pop it back on for another 20-min cycle.
I’ve been told I need a c-wire by actual Nest reps, so today I ordered one from Amazon 2-6hr delivery and IT ARRIVED! I’ll be installing this later today after the house heats up again because we have soccer practice and will not be home to hear the fan go off to pop the base off to recharge. Oh, yeah …and for the new Gen3 nest that I just purchased, it doesn’t even work anymore. Go figure! Do something Google Nest!

Post a picture of the original thermostat's wiring and one of how you wired the Nest.
If you have a Heat Pump system and use the convention system label on the original thermostat (or visa versa) to setup the new Nest, you will get problems like these.
