Comunicating with nest thermostat

I can see my thermostat in the app. It displays the current outside temperature. When I touch the "away" button, it toggles to the home icon instead of opening the thermostat. The thermostat is connected to the same network as my phone. I am unable to control the thermostat from my phone.

With that description, I'm assuming you're in the Nest app and not the Google Home app. The Home/Away toggle is not for your thermostat, it's telling the app that you are either Home or Away.

The thermostat icon is towards the bottom, below your cameras if you have cameras. You should see a circle with your inside temperature in the middle. That is what you click to access/control your thermostat. If you don't see anything like that try reconnecting the thermostat to your phone.
