I bought a used Nest Thermostat off ebay, it works fine but I cannot get it to recognize in the Google Home app - the app asks to either scan the QR code or enter the six digit set up code, neither are on the device. A factory reset would not change this situation. Is there a way to get this to work without the QR code or set up code?

The QR code is on the backside of the Display part of the thermostat. you should be aware that if the previous owner of that thermostat did not remove it from his nest account, you will not be able to register it into your Nest account. Additionally if you go into the menu of the thermostat and rotate the ring to Nest app, you can then select a QR code or ask her to give you the key code

Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately, there is neither a QR nor six-digit code on the back of my Nest display. To be clear, you mean when the thermostat is taken off the wall base and in one's hand, looking at the back should show the QR or code?

Hi folks,
@CoolingWizard, thanks for the help!
@tjdabomb, how's it going with your Nest Thermostat? Still need our help?
Thanks,
Edward

Yeah, I think this used thermo is still linked to the prior owners acct, and, I bought it over a year ago. It seems as though that is the issue and if so, I guess I am just stuck with it. It would be nice to tell alexa to control the unit but if it can't, its not worth replacing for just that.
thanks for getting back to me!

If the thermostat is “working” as you say, when you go to Menu, the Nest App, does it show the option for the QR code or Key?

When I go to Menu, Nest App, it says "Connected" and when I press on that screen, the detail for the Nest App says "This thermostat is connected to an account."

When you go to the Menu, there is a Nest App , there you can try delete account.

There is no choice to delete the account, it just says ""This thermostat is connected to an account.""

The person you purchased it from on eBay are they still available to see if they can delete it from their account? The problem is going to be I guess that they have to delete their nest account from there in and then the thermostat will let you delete it on your end I think. I’m not sure but it just seems to me that you have to delete it from their app first which means you need to know who has it still registered in their app.

Yes, I agree, that may be the case. IF I can find that ebay user, its been almost a year.....

On the nest learning thermostat third generation, the QR code is printed on the back of the thermostat front housing and it is all accessed when you go into the Nest app within the menu. But if you can’t get into the Nest app with the menu on the third generation model you can take it off the wall turn it over and there’s a QR code on the backside that would be the same
