Did I buy wrong thermostat?

Hi

I've just bought google nwst learning thermostat in black colour because it was on sale. I watched some videos before I bought it but the once I've opened up the box it looks completely different to the videos I saw. Video one has a round base and you connect all the wires in the Base and put nest on top.

The one I've bought has come with a heat link and seperate base.

Im very confused as I wanted to replace my existing digital thermostat with nest. It's a new house so all the wiring is there.

Any help will be appreciated.

I suppose the first questions are....What  country are you in, what generation thermostat have you purchased?

Uk

Google nest smart learning thermostat newest gen

I wanted a thermostat which replaces my existing digital thermostat and gets mounted in the same place. I didn't want to have to install a heat link near the boiler etc.

I assume you have a 3rd generation thermostat, but only a guess as you do not state the model. The one in the picture is a 3rd gen.

I think the videos you have been watching could be USA, as they do not have a Heat Link.

Yes that's the thermostat I got.

So in the UK there is no alternative to using heatlink?

Heatlink gets its wiring from the boiler and goes in the same cupboard. So the wiring going to the existing thermostat then becomes redundant? Why can that wiring not be utilised?

In my current thermostat I've got 230v live neutral earth and a pair of wiring for heating and a pair of wiring for water

Not if you want a Nest thermostat.

Who says the wiring to the old thermostat can't be used? You can use the wiring, but fed from the Heat Link.

Yes in most standard manual thermostats there will be a 3 core cable at 240v, the other wiring to your boiler etc. comes from a programmer. The Nest Heat Link/Display works as the programmer.

You should have read this, tells you all you need to know.

Hi @Jam6008, thank you so much for reaching out.

@Frustratedddd Thank you so much for the explanation. Indeed @Jam6008 you can utilise the existing wiring up to an extent, just make sure to follow the installation guide. Let me know if you need anything else.

Hi

I have looked at the guide, that's not the problem. Location of everything is the problem.

My boiler is downstairs in the kitchen. The water storage tank is upstairs in the landing. One of the thermostat for one zone is next to the stairs downstairs and second thermostat is in Bedroom 1.

It's figuring out where heatlink will go and where will I get the dc supply if I want to mount Google nest in the same place as my existing thermostats.

The Heat Links will always need to be connected to the boiler and near it. You can connect the Heat Link to the same power source as of the boiler's or the valves'. As long as the Heat Link has 30 cm of free space around it, everything should be good.
