Instead of just abandoning your most loyal customers, why not just release a stripped down app that allows simple control if the thermostat locally via wifi and freeze that app.
They could open source the api. But they wouldn't because it isn't in their business interests. I'll be on all my tech forums to see if any wizards could pull a simple get/set type app. Problem is security in the connection to the device though.
