I am having trouble with my Emerg. Heat wire. It is supposed to go into the * slot. However, I stripped it too short, and the detent will not stay down. I can try to splice in some extra wire, but there is so little room in the compartment. Is the Emerg. Heat wire necessary, or can I just seal it with electrical tape and close up, leaving the slot under the cover with a wire in it?

Emergency heat is needed if a heat pump system cannot get house warm enough it then activates the electric emergency heat strips. So if you do not connect that wire you will no longer have the ability to turn on the emergency heat.
Can you pull gently on the thermostat wire see if another few inches are inside the wall so you can get it connected to the Nest? Or you could pull a new wire if you can access the other end where it goes to the system. 50 feet of 5 conductor thermostat wire is around 25 bucks at Home Depot or Lowes.
