Expiration on current thermostats

CBC

Does anyone know when Google will terminate service on the current thermostats (i.e., 3rd and 4th gens)? Since my existing thermostat is fine yet the service is about to expire, I was just curious of the life cycle (i.e., expiration of service) on the current models- surely Google knows when they will decide to stop servicing those devices.

Both the Gen-3 and the Gen-4 thermostats are still supported.  The Gen-1, 2020 and the Gen-2 will stop support on October 25.

I understand when support Gen 1&2 will expire. I am inquiring about support for Gen 4. Should I presume support for Gen 4 will expire in 2037 (which is 13 years from its release date) or sooner?

@CBC ,

No company in history ever knows when they plan to end product support. Since the Nrst Gen-3 and Gen-4 ate both Gemini aware, it is a  good bet they will be supported for quite some time.

True, they do not know for sure on an exact date. However, they have forecasters that they pay good money to plan for their future. They have a good idea when they will terminate their support. We would be foolish to think that this was not racketeering at some level. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these thermostats nor the ability to support them. It is all about getting more money.

My original post was more rhetorical in nature. I was not looking to acquire an exact date; I was just trying to make a point.

@CBC ,

The industry and the world of consumers are seeking a more seamless integration within the home from lighting, sound, video, security and more.  To that end the early versions of the Nest Learning Thermostat are not compatible. This leaves a single solution and that is obsolescence.  The thermostat will still function with schedules and that sense it is equivalent to a basic house thermostat. Why not join the team and fully integrate and automate your home?

Please enlighten me on the significant differences from 2nd gen to 4th gen…

Mind you, I set a schedule and forget it.

@CBC , this will be a rather long response.

This is a great question, as the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) represents a significant evolution from the Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd Gen).

Here is a breakdown of the key differences you can share with the customer:

Comparison: Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd Gen) vs. (4th Gen)

The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) is a complete reimagining of our flagship thermostat, offering a major leap forward in design, intelligence, system compatibility, and smart home integration compared to the older 2nd Generation model.

(4th )

Design & Display

(Gen 2) Thicker profile with a stainless steel bezel. Smaller screen (3.27'' illuminated screen diameter).

(Gen 4) Sleek, modern, and slimmer profile. 60% larger, high-resolution crystal LCD display (2.68'' \times 2.68'', 600\times600 resolution) with a borderless, edge-to-edge glass

Remote Temperature Control

(Gen 2) Not compatible with external Nest Temperature Sensors.

(Gen 4) Includes one Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd Gen) in the box. Supports up to six sensors to manage hot/cold spots in specific rooms.

Advanced Display Feature

(Gen 2) Standard display of temperature, time, and mode (called Farsight).

(Gen 4) Dynamic Farsight: Highly customizable screen that shows more information like weather, air quality, humidity, time, and customizable clock faces from across the room.

System Compatibility

(Gen 2) Supports most common systems. The base has an older wiring connector design.

(Gen 4) Increased HVAC System Support (e.g., up to 3 stages of heating). The base has a different connector, and the device features Power Sharing to avoid needing a C-wire in most installations.

Smart Home Integration

(Gen 2) Primarily managed through the Nest app. Connected features will be discontinued on October 25, 2025 (loss of remote control, Home/Away Assist, and Google Assistant control).

(Gen 4) Full control and enhanced features through the Google Home app. Includes built-in Matter support for broad compatibility with other smart home ecosystems (Apple Home, Alexa, etc.).

Energy & Learning

(Gen 2) Learns your schedule over time to create an automatic program.

(Gen 4) Enhanced AI and Smart Schedule: Better learning capabilities with a focus on micro-adjustments for energy savings. Gives you the ability to accept or reject energy-saving suggestions within the Google Home app.

New Features

(Gen 2) No new feature updates.

(Gen 4) System Health Monitor (alerts you to potential HVAC issues) and Smart Ventilation (uses fresh air when quality is good).

Key Takeaways to consider:

1. Future-Proofing and Support: The 2nd Gen is an end-of-life product with support for connected features (like app control) ending in October 2025. The 4th Gen is our current flagship and is built to integrate with the modern smart home ecosystem via the Google Home app and Matter standard.

2. Room-by-Room Comfort: The 4th Gen is the first in-box Learning Thermostat to include a Nest Temperature Sensor, giving them the ability to prioritize the temperature in a specific room (like the bedroom) rather than just at the thermostat's location.

3. Modern Design and Display: The 4th Gen features a dramatically redesigned, larger, and higher-resolution display that can show more useful information from a distance with Dynamic Farsight.

Guess I don’t “get” what you and/or AI can explain. I don’t know that I need anything else from my thermostat other than for it to be programmed and controlled from my phone. Gen 1

@CoolingWizard

Google is not ending support for the Google Nest Thermostat (2020).
