Fan Icon Always Showing “Running” on Nest Thermostat (3rd Gen)

Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with my Nest Thermostat (3rd Generation) and wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this and knows how to fix it.

The problem:

The fan icon in the Nest app is always showing as “running,” even when the furnace and fan are completely off.

Here’s what I’ve tried and observed:

Turned everything off (both on the wall unit and in the app settings), but the fan icon still spins.

There is no sound or actual operation of the fan, so it’s not running.

My other Nest thermostat doesn’t have this issue; its fan icon behaves correctly. The blower units are exactly the same and wired the same.

This is a little annoying since it doesn’t accurately reflect the state of the system.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? If so, how did you fix it?

Hi tjweber,

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry that you're having trouble with your fan icon always showing “running” on the Nest Thermostat (3rd Gen). I understand how frustrating this can be. I'm here to help.

It looks like you might be running into some trouble because the Nest app is not detecting properly when you make changes to your system's fan. To help avoid confusion and make sure everything works smoothly, it's a good idea to:

  • Remove the Nest app from your cell phone.
  • Restart your cell phone.
  • Reinstall the Nest app.
  • if after all these steps the issue is the same.
  • Remove the thermostat from the Nest app.
  • Re-add the device on the Nest app.

Let me know how it goes and keep me posted.

Regards,

Kevin
