Gen 1 to New Learning Thermostat

1. Currently have the 1st Nest which is being excluded for future use.
2. I had it installed a long time ago and works with my current heat and air

3. I don’t want to hire another electrician to change to the newest Nest if I don’t have too.
4. Is the wiring the same? Just switching the wires to the new plate?

5. If it’s wired the same can a person who knows little about stuff like this be able to change it or should I spend the money for an electrician or does it require hvac person?
6. Thanks in Advance

Hello Cherri,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest Community Forum. I understand you’re looking to upgrade from your Nest Learning Thermostat 1st gen to a new Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen and have some questions about the installation process. It’s a pleasure to share more details.

The Nest Thermostats are designed to be user-friendly, and many people successfully install them on their own. Our easy guide will walk you through the process step-by-step. To learn more, check out this article: Install your Nest thermostat. In this case, you can use the same wiring configuration previously installed.

Before you start, here are a few recommendations:

  1. Turn off the power: The most crucial step before touching any wires is to turn off the power to your HVAC system at the circuit breaker. This is a vital safety precaution for you and your equipment.
  2. Snap a picture: Take a photo of the old thermostat's wiring before you remove any wires. This will serve as a reference guide for the new one.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to this forum.

Best regards,

Daniel
