Gen 3 thermostat not finding wifi

Mikeinc

Nest was working fine and connected to wifi for over 3 years. All of a sudden it disconnected and is unable to even find any wifi networks. I even tried standing next to it with my phone providing a hot spot but it didn't see any network.

I tried restarting my router and cycling the power multiple times, resetting the thermostat, doing a factory reset on the thermostat and disconnecting the thermostat and reconnecting.  Nothing had worked. And now that I did a factory reset I even lost my schedules with no way to reprogram without connectivity.

I reached out to Google and they only further help they offered since the device was out of warranty was to send me a link to buy a new one. I found this insulting given the device was defective to no fault of my own. Why would I buy another of it lasted just 3 years and they could not help fix?

Does anyone have any suggestions to fix? Or suggestions on other thermostats o could replace with that is of better quality?

Hey Mikeinc,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest Community Forum. I’m sorry to hear that your Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd generation is not connecting to your Wi-Fi network. No worries; I’m here to assist you.

I'm grateful for your time and effort in completing these troubleshooting steps described in the post, so let’s explore more options. To gain a clearer understanding of the situation, please provide the following information:

  • When did the problem first occur?
  • Does the thermostat display show any error codes or messages? To check that code, go to the options settings, then network.
  • Do you only have one Wi-Fi network, or are there others?
  • How far away is the thermostat from the router?
  • What's the software version of your thermostat?
  • What is the battery level of your thermostat? go to settings then tech information and finally power.

Please keep me updated so I can provide you with further assistance.

Best regards,

Daniel

  • Problem occurred about 2 weeks ago
  • Thermostat shows no error codes
  • Wifi plus and extended that shows up as it's own wifi. Both were visible on my phone while standing at the thermostat. Also as I noted in my original post I stood next to the thermostat and turned on my phones mobile Hotspot which the thermostat did not pick up either.
  • About 25'. As noted it was connected for a couple of years without issue. Nothing changed
  • I don't know how to confirm this. Since the issue I also did a factory reset
  • No battery issues or low battery
