Hi -

I have six gen 1's in my house. Can I replace them with the tado theromstat X? Would they fit on the same mounting panel on the walls?

Hi! Well, the dimensions of the 1st generation Nest Thermostat are 3.3 inches in diameter and 1.07 inches deep, while the Smart Thermostat X has dimensions of 3.93701 x 3.93701 inches in diameter and 0.826772 inches deep. You can order without any problem, but you would have to make a little more space at the base.

It should be noted that the first-generation Nest has reached its update limit after 10 years of use and will only function manually, as it will no longer be accessible through the app. I hope this information is helpful.

Ok understood but does it plug into the same backplate as the gen 1? I.e., is it compatible?

No, while the base of the first-generation Nest Thermostat is round (in fact, all of them are), the Smart Thermostat X has a square base. The bases are different, so even if you try to adjust it, unfortunately, it won't fit properly.

we've been royally shafted by google here. they don't give two hoots about the expense we're going to incur to replace these.

why did they even bother taking over nest if their policy is to abandon us when the mood takes them?

That's right. They shouldn't stop discontinuing it; sometimes people buy older versions, and support should always be there.

Agreed. Also, cant they just tell me what I need to do? Like do I need to rewire everything? They have offered me a discount on the Tado thermostat but is that compatible with everything else like heatlink?

Hi pw1976,

Thank you for posting in the community! I’m glad to address your concerns about the Tado Wireless Smart Thermostat X with the Nest Learning Thermostat (1st gen) wiring and the Smart Thermostat compatibility with Heatlink.

Rwiinbo, thank you for the information you provided, which is correct regarding the Nest Learning Thermostat (1st gen) and the Smart Thermostat X shapes and specifications.

In order to have the wiring evaluation evaluated, my best tip is to contact a professional; the same applies before purchasing new equipment. Consider that if the wiring should be changed, after some usage time, the  change can be beneficial, also, taking the opportunity from Google to have a discount offer in order not to switch brands, can save you time and money. Feel free to check the information in the article: Upcoming end of support for Nest Learning Thermostats (1st and 2nd gen).

About the third-party thermostat compatibility with Heatlink, this can also be evaluated by an expert; in principle, with some adjustments that consider the power feeding of the components, they can be mutually compatible.

I hope you find the above information useful; post any additional concerns or clarifications.

Regards,

Humberto

it's all costing us money tho, and it isn't even necessary. google's decision will almost certainly cost each of us several hundred pounds. the cost of a replacement system and then the hiring of a tradesman. for a product that still works perfectly this is simply unacceptable. in this environmental crisis it simply stinks.

does anyone from google monitor these forums, as i haven't seen any official comment from anyone yet, and there are several threads venting our disgust at this decision.

thanks i will fill that out. the link you direct us to tells us nothing and doesn't take into account the vast sums of money we will each have to shell out to replace a perfectly working piece of kit.
