Google Assistant suddenly not able to control Nest Thermostat

Google assistant all of a sudden won’t work with thermostat. I can ask it to turn the temperature up or down and it will work but it will not respond to “hey google turn off my thermostat” or “hey gooogle turn off/on hallway” it will not work via google assistant on my phone nor will it work on my nest hub I keep getting “this device is not set up” in various ways. I have reset both thermostat and hub, factory reset both, remove thermostat from google home & re adding it. Asked google to sync all my devices. It worked before when I would say “hey google turn off my hallway or thermostat” but all of a sudden it hasn’t been working. What the hell & I can’t find a contact number to speak to someone from google directly to get this resolved.

I have the exact same issue. Mine stopped working last week after previously working. I'm here looking for help as well

Hi everyone,

Thank you for reaching out to the community. I'm sorry to hear the Google Assistant is not able to control the Nest Thermostat, but there's no need to worry; I'm happy to help you right now.

I appreciate your effort in doing troubleshooting steps with your Nest Hub and the Nest Thermostat. To get a better understanding of the situation, please help me out by answering the following questions:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?

  • Is the Nest Thermostat successfully set up on the same Wi-Fi network as the speaker or display?

  • Can the Nest Thermostat be controlled using the Nest app or Google Home app?

  • Are any of the voice commands working with the Nest Thermostat?

Any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Best regards,

Gabriela

My model is a Nest E. Temp control and Function control works via voice. But device will not turn on or off. It gives the error message of device not connected during these commands. Digital total control works via Nest app and Home app

Hi @Stolls1862,

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate the time you took to respond to my post and the information you provided me about your Nest Thermostat E and the Google Assistant problem. I'm happy to continue assisting you.

Please try the following steps with the Google Home app and your Nest devices:

  • Verify the Nest Hub is connected to the same network as the Nest Thermostat.
  • Confirm if your Google account on your mobile device is the same account linked to your Google Nest or Home device.
  • Confirm if you are using the same Google account as the primary account from within the Google Home app.
  • Verify if the device is listed.
    • Open the Google Home app .
    • At the upper right, tap the account icon.
    • Select Assistant settings > Devices.
    • Do you see your Nest Thermostat listed under the Assistant devices?
  • Try the following voice command word-for-word:
    • Voice command: “Turn on cooling.

Feel free to keep us posted if you have more questions.

Best regards,

Gabriela

Yes the Google nest thermostat is connected and linked properly as it has been previously. Yes the Google account is the proper one across all devices as it has been. The command worked but it's response was to turn 6 devices to cooling. That is not the go around fix I was looking for. I am looking for a direct fix to the issue of the specific device command suddenly failing

Hi @Stolls1862,

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your time doing the troubleshooting steps with me. I'm sorry to hear the issue is still not resolved. I'm happy to continue assisting you.

Please try the following steps below:

  • Reboot the Google Nest Thermostat and the Nest Hub.

  • Reboot the Wi-Fi router.

  • Reboot the Nest Thermostat Bridge. (Unplug the Nest Thermostat bridge from the power source for about 30 seconds and then plug the power source back into the bridge.)

    • Wait for the bridge to finish rebooting (normally takes about 1 or 2 minutes).

    • Once everything is back on the network, try the following voice command:

      • Voice command: “Okay Google, turn on cooling” or “Okay Google, make it warmer.” Did the voice command work?

Feel free to keep us posted if you have more questions.

Regards,

Gabriela

I have performed those steps already in my troubleshooting this last week with no resolve. If I say heating or cooling without a device name it turns all devices associated with heating or cooling on/off.

Hi @Stolls1862,

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your effort in doing all the troubleshooting steps with me. I'm happy to continue assisting you.

I understand your frustration with the issue still not being resolved. If you want to use the Google Assistant with voice commands, you need to say the specific name of the device you want to activate.

If you are still having trouble controlling your devices, try the following steps below:

  • Open the Google Home app .
  • Tap Settings.
  • Under "Devices, groups & rooms," tap your device's tile.
  • Tap Name or Device Information > Device Name.

Tips for renaming your device:

  • Don't include numbers, special characters, or room names.
  • Avoid similar names (for example, "Table light left" and "Table light right").

Let me know if you have further questions.

Best regards,

Gabriela

I understand completely how to use the Google Assistant with voice commands. I would appreciate if you refrained from responding condescendingly. The responses you gave to me indicated that you required me to use the exact phrase as you typed it. The phrases yo typed did not have any device name included with them. My Google Nest Thermometer E had been working with voice commands properly up until recently. I do not require instructions on how to use Google Assistant with voice commands. I need resolve to the device suddenly stop working as promised. Thank you

Hi @Stolls1862,

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate you performing all the troubleshooting steps with me. I'm happy to continue assisting you.

I understand that you would like to use voice commands to operate your Nest Thermostat E's heating and cooling. You need to give each of your devices a unique name if you want to use Google Assistant or voice commands to a specific device.

You can follow this article to Control smart home devices added to the Google Home app.

We appreciate your thoughts; please consider sharing your thoughts directly with our development team through this feedback form

Feel free to keep us posted if you have more questions.

Regards,

Gabriela

Stop being a bot. I am not having issues controlling the heating and cooling function. I am having issues with the power function. All of my devices DO have individual unique names. Get someone else on here
