Google Nest flashes amber green green and won’t power up

Hey Everyone,

I’ve been struggling with this for a little while now and am just losing hope I’ll get it sorted. I bought my first Google Nest thermostat around 2 years ago. Plugged it in and it worked great, up until around 6 months ago. That’s when it would no longer connect to my WIFI network. In fact, it couldn’t even detect a WIFI network. My nearest WIFI AP is around 6 feet from the thermostat and the next nearest one is 12 feet (I’m an IT guy, what can I say).

When it failed to detect and communicate I contacted support and then sent me a replacement unit. I plugged it in and that’s when this problem first showed up. The replacement would show the Google G for a moment and then it would go dark and just flash an amber light, and then quickly after a green light. Then there would be a brief pause and it would flash another green light. It would sit for a moment and then repeat over and over again.

I initially thought I was sent a faulty unit, so I plugged my old one back in, because it still worked I just couldn’t access it from my phone, and sent the new one back. Google sent me another and the exact same thing happened. I sent it back and they sent me a third one and it did the exact same thing. I plugged it into a USB cable to charge and then plugged it in but that didn’t help. So I sent that one back as well.

That’s when I figured it must be something wrong with my wiring. We have an old house, so maybe the smart thermostat needed something else. We didn’t have a common available, so I ran a new 8 strand wire and wired it up the to furnace with the guidance of a client of mine that does furnaces. Everything powered up, but my old thermostat still couldn’t see a WIFI network, so I reengaged Google Support and they sent me yet another replacement and lo and behold, it’s still flashing amber/green/green.

I also moved the common to another common port (my furnace has 2) which I know is active because the AC and something else is plugged into it. But that doesn’t seem to have helped. I’m kind of at a loss. Any advice?

Hi ForgeFire,

Thanks for reaching out, I understand that you thermostat only shows a green blinking light on the display it means that your thermostat is stuck in update process, I understand that this can be frustrating no worries I am here to help! I recommend you Restart your thermostat please try this:

  1. press and hold your thermostat ring for about 10 seconds this will make a restart process.

I hope this helps! and let me know what happens when you press and hold the thermostat device.
