Google assistant stopped being able to control Nest thermostat

For more than a year, I've been able to use voice commands with my Google assistant (Nest speakers, Google Nest, iOS Google Home ) to control my Nest thermostat.

About 6 months ago, my voice assistant stopped responding appropriately, instead saying "sorry, it looks like that thermostat hasn't been set up yet..."

I can control the thermostat just fine using the thermostat itself, or the Google Home app on my phone. It is specifically the voice Assistant which does not work.

I have deleted and reinstalled the thermostat three times. I've tried to update the firmware on the Nest Thermostat itself. I've tired software fixes, but nothing seems to do the trick. We live in a 3 story home and would love the accessibility to call out commands to the Nest speakers and for the Google assistant to adjust the thermostat.

Hi @Bkdicki,

sorry for the long wait,

That's definitely frustrating! You've done a good job of troubleshooting so far. Here are some additional steps you can try to get your Google Assistant working with your Nest Thermostat again:

1. Check Linking and Permissions:

  • In the Google Home app, verify that your Nest Thermostat is still linked to your account. Go to the app, tap on your Nest Thermostat icon, and ensure it shows as "connected."
  • Double-check that Google Assistant has permission to control your thermostat. In the Google Home app settings, look for a section related to "Home control" or "Devices" and make sure the Nest Thermostat has permission to be accessed by Assistant.

2. Unlink and Relink Accounts:

  • Sometimes, a re-link can resolve glitches. In the Google Home app, unlink your Nest account from the app. Then, relink it by following the on-screen instructions.

3. Restart Devices:

  • Restart your Nest Thermostat, all your Nest speakers/Google Nest devices, and your phone/tablet. This can sometimes clear up temporary issues.

4. Check Network Connectivity:

  • Ensure all your devices (thermostat, speakers, phone) have a stable internet connection. Try restarting your router as well.
  • 5. Factory Reset (Last Resort):
    • This should be a last resort, as it erases all settings on your Nest Thermostat. Only proceed if the above steps fail. Consult the Nest support website for specific reset instructions for your thermostat model.
