Google home app will not start nest installation

I've installed the nest thermostat into my wall. It requires me to set up through the home app. It's all well and good. I scan the QR code on the back, but the app will not begin the installation process, it just immediately goes back to the home screen and acts as if I did nothing.

The app is updated. Version 2.53. something

The nest is brand new

What's the deal here?

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with setting up your Nest Thermostat with your Google Home app. To isolate the issue, please try the following steps:

• Clear the Google Home app cache and data
• Uninstall the Google Home app
• Reboot your phone
• Install Home app
