Google wifi keeps connecting nest to 5ghz

My 3rd gen nest thermostat keeps going offline randomly with my Google WiFi mesh network. Checking my google wifi connections, it says the thermostat is connected with 5ghz. I know the nest thermostat only has 2.4ghz. Google WiFi does not let you have separate 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks so that I can connect the thermostat to a dedicated 2.4ghz connection.
It’s driving me crazy that I have two Google products that won’t work properly with each other. Do I have to really change one of the out in order to have it work right?

We had similar connection issues with a printer...kept trying to connect our dual band router at 5 GHz...and the printer is not compatible with 5 GHz...I finally went into the Wi-Fi Router set up (not the Printer set up), and "disabled" the 5 GHz connection. Now, all our devices connect to the 2.4 GHz...as that is the only speed available.

You might try this.

Unless I’m missing something, I don’t think there is a setting with my Google WiFi mesh system that allows me to disable 5ghz. There is also no way to set up separate 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks and that therein lies the problem. Once you connect the nest thermostat to my Google WiFi network and don’t have the ability to choose or split between 2.4ghz and 5ghz, the Google mesh system decides between 2.4 or 5 automatically and for some reason it keeps connecting at 5ghz where the nest doesn’t have 5ghz.

I am not familiar with the Google WiFi mesh system...I have a D-Link wi-fi router which serves several devices...printers, mobile phones, etc. in our home...I access the settings by opening my browser, and entering the "default IP Address" of the router. I found the IP address by doing a web search for my D-Link router.  I can then disable the 5GHz option. Hope you find your solution!

Hello folks,

I apologize for the inconvenience you've experienced with your Nest Thermostat going offline. Let's jump in and get it back online!

@Michael74, interference can be hard to identify and resolve since it’s dependent on the environment. We can do as much as possible to help identify and resolve interference issues, but ultimately, this may be something about the connection. To confirm, how far away is your thermostat from your router? Is it showing any message code? Could you provide a rundown of all the steps you've tried? Also, here's a troubleshooting guide when the Nest thermostat is offline.

Let us know if you're still having trouble from here.

I appreciate your input, @RickDJ.

Regards,
Mark
