Green Light Blinking and Please Attach Display to Base message - won't start up

We've had our nest now for a few months and got it working well.
Yesterday I had to restart the WiFi in our house and I don't think the Nest ever reconnected (not sure if that matters but providing context)

Today at 1 PM I noticed the nest shut down.  When I tried to restart it, I got a blinking green light and the message "please attach the display to the base". I had not of course removed the unit from the wall so it seemed like an odd message.
I removed and reattached it - same message.  Tried to charge the battery using a USB connection many times.  Each time, I reconnect display to base, the start-up starts, stops after the colors start swirling and I get the same error message.
Getting cold in the house - help would be appreciated.
My nest does NOT have the C wire used in its wiring if that matters

Hi JGFayan,

Thanks for reaching out and for being a step ahead of us. If your Nest Thermostat’s display LED flashes a green light, it means the thermostat is on the software update phase software, boot up phase, restart phase, or the thermostat is connected to a charger. Usually, when the thermostat flashes a green light, it only lasts a minute or two. Once the thermostat finishes the software update and restart phase , the display turns on.

If the thermostat continues to flash a green light and remains unresponsive for more than 5 minutes, try the troubleshooting steps here:

  1. Remove and reconnect the display.
  2. If the issue persists, press and hold down the thermostat ring for 10 seconds to restart it.
  3. If the issue persists, verify that your thermostat mounts (can get detected by a computer if it’s connected via a micro-USB cable).
  4. If the Nest drive doesn’t mount, restart the thermostat and the computer.
  5. If the Nest drive still doesn’t mount, connect another USB device to the computer via the cable to check if it detects and/or installs the USB device.
    1. If the computer doesn’t detect the USB device, use a different USB cable, USB port, or computer.
    2. If the computer detects the USB device, manually eject the USB device, and then replug the display into the computer.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

Jenelyn
