Heat and AC controlled separately

My mother-in-law is considering a Nest thermostat for her 2 floor house…

On the main floor, a thermostat controls the heat for that floor and the AC for the whole house.

On the second floor, a thermostat controls only the heat for that floor.

So the heating is controlled independently per floor, but the AC is controlled just on the main floor.

What’s the best setup for her house? Will she need to buy a nest thermostat for each floor or could she use just an extra temperature sensor to control the heat on the second floor… would the app support that?

I don't have an answer, but could you elaborate on what the thermostats control (multiple furnaces?  single AC? heating/cooling use same air handler/vents?, etc).  Age of home?  This might help someone better answer compatibility with Nest.

I'm asking since I have a 1951 home with two boilers (1st floor forced air, and 2nd floor hot water radiators).  AC has two separate units as well: first floor uses same heat/cool venting, and 2nd floor has entirely separate air handler with small ceiling vents.  I have three thermostats.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiries.

I appreciate your input, @Buttermilk.

@mc365, it depends on your heating unit, if you have a separate heating system with two thermostats to control it. You need to have two Nest thermostats for its configuration. In addition, if both thermostats control the same heating system, a Nest Temperature Sensor can help your thermostat keep you comfortable on the floor you choose, at the time of day you choose. Here's an article to learn about the Nest Temperature Sensor.

Note: The Nest Temperature Sensor is only compatible with the Nest Thermostat E and the Nest Learning Thermostat.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Regards,
Mark
