Heat stage 2 all the time, how to get it using stage 1?

I’m hoping someone can help me out. I don’t know anything about thermostats or heat pumps. I had the nest thermostat installed for my electric heat pump a few years ago. It’s always worked beautifully and I’ve had no issues. Up until this last weekend. The house was not being heated very well. And the thermostat read that it was engaging stage two. I couldn’t get it to use stage one. So I’m stuck with 64 to 66° which is just too cold for me.

as I said, before my heat pump is electric, and the indoor unit appears to be working. The outdoor unit does engage, just not for long.

What do I need to do to get it to heat the house again? I’ve tried running the thermostat test, but I don’t have any heat coming through the vents. The thermostat indicates that it is heating, at least it’s orange.

any help is appreciated!

Hi @TinaMe

Thank you for reaching out to the community.

I’m sorry to hear that your Nest Thermostat stopped working properly. I understand that your thermostat is working only with the 2nd stage of heating, I'm happy to help.

To troubleshoot your thermostat, I'll need you reply the following questions:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • Have you tried to do a Factory reset on your thermostat?
  • Have you done another Troubleshooting Instead to run a Heating test?
  • Does the furnace activate while the fan doesn’t?
  • When was the last time that the system received maintenance?

Keep me posted if you need more help.

Best regards,

Derick.

Thank you for the responses! I did find out. It’s not the nest thermostat but the blower on my heat pump that is causing the problem. I’ve got three very expensive. Bids to look over this weekend to get the problem fixed. You can close this topic.
