Heat still running when Nest reaches temperature

Jaq1127

Today my heat was set to 70 and although the house temperature was at 76 the heat was still running. This has happened in the past and the house has reached up to 80°. Based on answers in another thread, I removed the thermostat from the back plate and the heat did turn off which indicates an issue with the thermostat itself. So now my question is how to fix the thermostat issue since I've only owned it for a few months.

Hi Jaq1127,

Thanks for reaching out. I understand that your heating system is staying on, even after reaching the target temperature. That can be frustrating, but don't worry, I'm here to help!

To better understand the issue, please answer the following questions:

  1. What type of Nest thermostat do you have?
  2. When did this problem start?
  3. Have you noticed any other unusual behaviors in your system since the issue began?
  4. Are you receiving any error messages? If so, what do they say?
  5. Is this a newly installed thermostat? If yes, have you used the Compatibility Checker tool to verify your HVAC system's compatibility with your Nest thermostat?
  6. What type of HVAC system do you have (e.g., heat pump, conventional system)?

I look forward to your response.

Regards,

Manuel

Hi Jaq1127,

Thanks for the photo. It looks like the Y1 and G connector buttons may not be fully pressed down. I recommend pressing them down firmly to ensure the Google Nest Thermostat works correctly.

Please let me know if the inconvenience persists after pressing the wires as I suggested.

Regards,

Manuel

The buttons are pressed down as firmly as possible

I'm not sure which gen it is, but it's a Nest Learning Thermostat. I can provide the serial number if that's helpful.

The problem has been happening on and off for a few months.

The only unusual behaviors are related to the heat. In the summer, the AC would be running and suddenly the air would be coming out hot instead of cool. This happened 3 or 4 times.

I'm not receiving any error messages.

The thermostat was newly installed in June by a professional HVAC company.

I'm pretty sure we have a conventional system.

I used the compatibility tool and my system is compatible with the Nest Learning Thermostats

Hi Jaq1127,

Thanks for your reply. This helps to better understand the situation. I recommend you try the following steps:

  1. Please send me a picture of the wire labels connected to the Nest Learning Thermostat. remove the display from the base plate and there you will see the wires.
  2. Have you recently added any auto-schedules? If so, please follow these steps:
    • Open the Nest app.
    • Tap Settings.
    • Tap Auto-Schedule.
    • Turn off Auto-Schedule.
  3. Ensure the thermostat wires are fully inserted into the terminals. For safety reasons, turn off the HVAC system's power at the fuse box or system switch and check each wire connector to make sure each wire is fully inserted.

I will be awaiting your response

Regards,

Manuel

I've turned off auto schedule and there are no other schedules added to the system. The wires all appear to be inserted fully.

I cannot figure out how to attach a photo in this thread. Can I send it some other way?
