Heatlink not working after power cut

RicWalLar

I have a 3rd Generation Nest thermostat, installed 2 years ago (spring 2020) which has been fine until now. We've been away for 3 weeks and it's apparent that early in that period the electricity power circuit tripped which caused the Nest & our wifi to stop. On return last night and after resetting the trip switch the Heatlink will not restart, no lights, tried the button for well over 30 seconds. Nothing else has changed: the router/wifi is on and the Heatlink & thermostat are in the same location as before. There's power to the boiler and to the Nest thermostat which shows H71 but obviously will not connect as the Heatlink seems to be dead. Does this mean a new Heatlink is needed or are there other options I should try? Thanks.

Hey @RicWalLar,

Thank you for reaching out! I'm sorry to hear about your issue, but I'll do my best to help you. Let's start with some questions:

1. What type of Nest thermostat do you have?
2. When was it installed?
3. Did the issue happen during installation or after installation? Was it installed by a Nest Pro or by a regular installer?
4. Does the boiler activate when calling for heat by pressing the Heat Link's button to activate Manual Mode?
5. How many thermostats do you have?
6. Have you recently had service or maintenance on your electrical, plumbing, or heating system?
7. Have you tried any troubleshooting steps before contacting us?

Thank you.

1. 3rd generation

2. March 2020

3. Long after installation, within the past month. Installation was not by a Nest Pro but by a competent heating engineer. There has been no problem over the ensuing two years until now. The Heat Link appears to be dead, following a power cut (which was reset after about 3 weeks of being off, on our return to the house 2 days ago).

4. No. There are no lights on the Heat Link and nothing happens when the button is pressed.

5. One, located within about 4 metres of the Heat Link, on mains power and not moved from its location during its use for over two years. There has never been a connectivity issue.

6. Boiler was serviced about 4 months ago.

7. Yes, all the recommended steps but as there is no light on the unit and clearly nothing happens, no activation steps can follow through. The thermostat refers to the H71 error.

If the Heat Link is dead is it possible to acquire one separately (without a new thermostat) and if so how and at what cost? I am not prepared to buy a complete new system so would have to ditch it and go for an alternative less expensive programmer for the heating system.

I might be able to help you with a Heat Link replacement if it's needed. If you have not already make sure to double check all breakers and switches to make sure nothing has tripped. Also check the boiler as it can have a separate isolation switch sometimes. Confirm the boiler has power, it should have a LED or display that turns on.

If it all looks good try and power cycle the Heat Link, if you're comfortable in doing so. Turn the power off to the Heat Link for a few minutes and then turn it back on. See if it has any reaction when you press the button on it after.

I've done all that already but have tried again with no luck. The Heat Link really does seem dead. The boiler, on the same circuit, has power (LED illuminated). Obviously I haven't opened the Heat Link up to check its circuits as I'm not an electrician.
