Help With Wiring Nest Learning Thermostat

Trying to convert to Nest Learning Thermostat from Honeywell.  My old Honeywell had the following connections (from right to left in the picture above):

R - Red wire

Y - Yellow wire

W - Orange wire

G - Green wire

W2 - White wire

In hooking up the new nest, I have made the following connections with those same wires and connected the blue common wire which was already in the wall but not connected to my old Honeywell:

Y1 - Yellow Y wire in old Honeywell

G - Green G wire in old Honeywell

RH - red R wire in old Honeywell

C - Blue “Common” wire which was connected to old Honeywell

W2/Aux - White W2 wire in old Honeywell

W1 - Orange “W” wire in old Honeywell

Here is a picture:

My concern is the W1 and W2/Aux connections which now result in two stage heating. The old Honeywell did not have a W1 and the Im fearful that I should only have the White W2 wire connected to the nest and hide the orange “W” wire that was connected to the old Honeywell. Any ideas or suggestions?

My wife told me I should have just hired someone to do this. I would be grateful if someone could help me out on this question so that my wife doesn’t get to rub my nose in this one down the line. Thanks.

W1 and W2 are for 2-stage heating.  If you have a 2-stage furnace, that's really nice. We have one, and love it.  The furnace runs very quietly and maintains the temp.  Open an outside door and let a blast of cold air in, and the furnace kicks into the higher speed to bring the heat back up more quickly.  It's really nice to have it automatically ramp up and down as needed.  Do you know if you have 2-stage heating?

One way to test is to set the thermostat 2 degrees higher than the room temp.  Wait a couple minutes and listen to the blower air speed.  Then bump up the thermostat by 5-10 degrees and wait a couple more minutes.  You should hear the blower speed up and hear more air noise from the vents.  The Nest screen and app should show 'Stage 2 Heating'.  If that's what you see and hear, you're good to go.

If you're not seeing/hearing a low speed and then a high speed,  the W1 and W2 wires might be reversed.  The most conventional wiring is for White to go to W1.  The only way to be absolutely sure is to open the furnace door and check to see which colors are going to W1 and W2 on the furnace board.  If you only have a W or W1 (no W2) on the furnace board, you should disconnect W2 from the Nest.
