Help with nest thermostat wiring

Hannah2222

Hello!

A bit of confusion regarding wiring my best learning thermostat. I have a jumper wire between W/E and W2 on my original thermostat. Nest app is telling me to only connect to W1. Want to confirm that this is correct. My system does have emergency heat

Hi @Hannah2222,

You're on the right track! Here's why the Nest app is asking you to connect only to W1:

  • W1 and W2: These terminals control stages of heating in your system. W1 activates the first stage, and W2 (if present) activates the second stage for additional heating if needed.
  • Jumper Wire: The jumper wire between W/E and W2 on your old thermostat likely combined both stages into one signal.
  • Nest Compatibility: Nest thermostats typically support single-stage heating (W1) and single-stage cooling (Y1).
  • Confirmation: Yes, it's likely correct to connect only the wire to W1 on your Nest thermostat, even though your old one had a jumper between W/E and W2.

Regards,

Mario.

I also have a jumper wire between E & W2 on my old thermostat and similarly the nest app told me to put the wire in W1. None of the functions are working. I've read through a couple other W/E & W2 jumper wire posts. They say to use the W2 spot and I've tried this. It still doesn't work.
