Home/Away Assist doesn't go Away when we're not home

Our Nest thermostat is set up so Home/Away Assist is triggered by my phone and my wife's phone. This is confirmed by the list of devices in "What decides if you're home". Both my phone and hers are listed, and no others.

But when we both go out, Away mode is not triggered automatically.

In each of our apps' activity history, it shows the correct time that each of us left home (mine shows that my device was away from home at 6pm, and hers shows that she was away from home at 5.30pm). But the Activity History does not show Away mode being triggered when I left home, despite me being the last to leave.

What's going wrong, and how can we fix it? Thanks!

Hi bitoclass,

Thanks for reaching out. I understand that Home/Away isn't working properly with your Google Nest Thermostat. I know this can be frustrating, but don't worry, I'm here to help!

Before I can assist you further, I'll need to ask a few questions to better understand the situation.

  • What model of Google Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • Do you have any other Google Nest devices?
  • Do you have phone location enabled to use the Nest app or Google Home app?

Regards,

Manuel

Hi there,

The answers to your questions are:

  • As shown in my original post, it's a Nest 3rd generation thermostat
  • No
  • As explained in my original post, yes.

As an experiment, since my original post, we tried removing the thermostat itself from the list of devices which affect Home/Away mode ("What decides if you're home" in the app), and it has been working since then. But that doesn't explain why it doesn't work when the thermostat is included in the list of devices. Is there a fault with the thermostat which is causing it to think it is permanently detecting us being home even when we are not? Nothing has changed about the thermostat's location since it was last working in the previous winter, and we do not have a pet or anything else that could be triggering it when we aren't here.

Thanks for your help!
